Arthur J. Montague, 85, of Bloomington, passed away at 12:52 a.m. on Sunday, March 20, 2011 at Advocate BroMenn Regional Medical Center in Normal.
He was born October 17, 1925 in St. Catherines General Hospital in Ontario, Canada the son of Roy and Hilda Steer Montague. At 17, Arthur joined the Royal Canadian Air Force and served his country during WWII. He trained in Toranto and Winnipeg and received his wings as a Wireless Air Gunner. He was stationed in England, Scotland and Ireland.
After WWII, Art moved to Chicago and got a job at Weiboldts Department Store and then Sealy Mattress Company and worked there until he retired 35 years later in 1989, with numerous sales awards. He also married Dorene Hickstein on September 20, 1950. She survives him.
Arthur is also survived by three sons, Gregory (Connie) Montague, Gary (Carol) Montague and Scott (Liz) Montague; eight grandchildren, Melina, Alyssa (Greg), Geoff (Jetty), Jennifer, Lauren (Gary), Monica, Morgan and Mitchell (Scott); four great-grandchildren, Kylie, Mackenzie, Mia and Brenden and one sister, Rubye Ann Kirtley.
Arthur was an avid Chicago sports fan. He took pleasure in many activities such as pool, cards, bowling, tennis, skiing and gardening. He greatly enjoyed golf and managed to have five hole-in-ones over the years and even shot a 71 at the age of 72. He also loved hockey and started a youth hockey program in the early 1970’s. He not only officiated games but he played in some as well. He made it a point to travel the world and spend as much time with his family as possible, as he loved them deeply. He also volunteered at BroMenn Hospital.
A Memorial service will be held at 3:00p.m. on Saturday, March 26, 2011 at East Lawn Funeral Home in Bloomington. Visitation will take place from 12:00pm to 3:00pm at East Lawn Funeral Home. Cremation rites have been accorded.
He was a great husband, father and grandfather and was well respected by all. His loving wife Dorene of 60 years, along with his family and friends, will miss him dearly.
