He was born just after WWII in Hawaii, where his parents, Michael and Mae Paulik were stationed. The young family moved to the south side of Chicago after their service ended. Raised by his mother and maternal grandparents, Donald fell in love with the horse racing business and it became his profession for most of his working life.
He met his true love, Jacqueline Resetar, at 24. After breaking up with her, because he was scared of how much he loved her (and being just a bit youthful and dumb), he was able to win her back. The couple was married in 1973. Their journey took them to Morris, Chicago Heights, Beecher, Vegas (almost), Florida twice and finally Bloomington.
They had three kids, Mark, Samantha and Melissa, though they always wanted more. They loved their nieces and nephews like they were their own. Their youngest daughter, Melissa, married Gustavo “Tavo” Leal in 2014 and gave Donald some of the greatest joys of his life - his three beautiful granddaughters: Morelia, Mirabelle and Amelia. He also had several brothers and sisters: Karole, Christine, Michael, Stephen and Victor.
Donald was a Mr. Fix It type of guy. He loved nature and the tranquility it provided. He was a big-hearted, intelligent, generous, progressive man. He was not overly loquacious, but if you played ‘60s Top 40 music, look out for a serenade. He loved watching basketball, riding roller coasters in his younger days, reading, and playing dominoes, cards and Trivia Pursuit.
He loved his family even more - fiercely really. He was loyal to his dying breath and always more concerned with his wife than himself. He wasn’t perfect, but who is? He will be immensely missed. And loved always.
Private family services will be held at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.
