She was born at home near Owaneco, IL on April 19, 1921, the daughter of John A. Brookens and Beulah (Masters) Brookens. A graduate of Taylorville High School, Elsie attended Eastern Illinois University and Brown's Business College. She worked at a dress shop in Decatur until she married Robert McKittrick on December 11, 1941.
Elsie was a homemaker who raised five children until the youngest was in high school when she began working as a teller at the First National Bank in Taylorville. She was a devoted member of (Buckeye United Methodist Church and participated in Christian County Home Extension. She enjoyed playing piano, the outdoors and taking walks on the family farm. After retirement, she enjoyed trips with Bob to visit relatives and to the Grand Canyon and Alaska.
She was preceded in death by her husband Bob and her brother Harold Brookens. She is survived by her children: Linda McElroy, Columbia, MO; Donna (Jerome) Pleshe, Kincaid, IL; John (Sally) McKittrick, Orlando, FL; Dale (Gloria) McKittrick, Baltimore, MD; Karen (Larry)Spiegler, Ravenna, OH; 10 grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; and 19 nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at Sutton Memorial Home in Taylorville on October 6 at 1:00 pm.
