George C. Wilburn, 78, of Towanda, passed away at 10:45 a.m. on Friday, July 15, 2011 at his home.
He was born July 9, 1933 in Pontiac, IL, son of Alfred and Ellen Kingsworth Wilburn. He married Helen Bozarth Thacker on July 17, 1963 in Pontiac.
Surviving are his wife of Towanda; three daughters, Donna (Tracy) Keith of Tampa, FL, Jackie (Gary) Baker and Debbie (Jeff) Strong, both of Bloomington; three sons, Charles (Sheree’) Thacker of Stanton, George Wilburn, Jr of Secor and David (Baljid) Wilburn of Towanda. Also surviving are 15 grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren and two brothers, Charles (Phyllis) Wilburn and Donald Wilburn, both of Bloomington.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Cheryl Wolf; one brother, James and three sisters, Mary, Edith and Lenore.
He was a United States Army Veteran, having served during the Korean Conflict. He was honorably discharged in 1953 as Private First Class.
George first worked for Union Local #162 as a finisher in the Bloomington-Normal area, and later worked as a correctional officer. Gardening was his passion and he retired from Wilburn’s Garden Market in Towanda, where he was the owner and operator.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, July 18, 2011 at East Lawn Funeral Home in Bloomington, where visitation will be one hour prior to services. Interment will be at East Lawn Memorial Gardens in Bloomington.
