

John was a proud United States Navy Veteran, known for his bravery, humor, thoughtfulness, and compassion. He enjoyed life, loved to laugh and have a great time. John was an outstanding chef, having worked many years in this capacity until his retirement in 2023. He was also an avid reader and learner, spending much of his time at the library and encouraging his children to pursue education.
John is survived by his sons John (Laparasena Gandy) Richardson and Quantarius Bennett, his daughters Shamika Berger and Zayla Berger, his grandsons, Kye Richardson, Marquis Pierson and Elijah Brown, his granddaughters Kyleigh Richardson, Sa’Rhi House and O’Siana House. His brothers Glenn (Dale) Joseph, Vincent (Jackie) Joseph, Kenneth (Sharron) Shepard, James “Yackie” Brown (cousin), his sisters Valarie Boakye, Denise House and Karen Hall, special friend; Phyllis McElroy, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
John was preceded in death by his parents, one daughter Johnnecia Marjalaya House, sister Patricia and brother James Kevin.
John's special relationship with the people in his life and his unorthodox personality will be fondly remembered. He enjoyed many things in life, including animals, watching different types of movies and had a deep interest in numbers. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him. He is now with the Lord, watching over family and friends.
A memorial service will be held at East Lawn Funeral Home, located at 1102 Airport Road, Bloomington, IL 61704, on February 28, 2026, from 10:00 am to 11:00 am.
