

Joy Elene (Bowren) Sorden, 76, of Normal, IL passed away Sunday August 11, 2024 at Carle Bromenn Medical Center in Normal. Joy was born March 17, 1948 to Russell and Fay Bowren. Joy was a member of Sandia High School’s graduating class of 1966 in Albuquerque, NM. In 1970 she graduated from University of New Mexico with a bachelor’s degree in music. In 1975, Joy married the love of her life, Joel Sorden. They were happily married for two years before Joel’s untimely passing in 1977.
In 1970, Joy began her career as a music teacher at Vaughn Municipal Schools, in Vaughn, NM. She then worked as the band and choral director at Bethany School District, in Bethany, IL in 1971. Thereafter, she began teaching music in the Southwestern School District in Alton, IL. She retired from there after 30 years of service. Joy’s life revolved around her love for music. She had strong passion for her career and for the students she taught. Following her retirement, she taught for Shabani School of Music. In addition to teaching, she was an avid pianist and flute player herself, and performed for the Blackburn Community College Concert Band and the Bloomington Community Band.
Surviving are Joy’s loving siblings: Linda and Robert King (Chugiak, AK), Diana and Robert Bricker (Bloomington, IL), Tim and Linda Bowren (Indianapolis, IN); beloved nieces and nephews: Robert King Jr and Joshua King (Chugiak, AK), Justin King (Cincinnati, OH), Jonathan King (Dayton, KY), Ben and Crystal Bricker, Maddie Bricker, Samantha Bricker, Alex Bricker (Bloomington, IL), Jeff and Jessie Bricker (Glendale, MO), Sarah Wheeler (Indianapolis, IN), Cathy and John Darrow (Darien, IL); and great-nieces and nephews: Sean, James, Noel, and Anna Bricker, Graham Wheeler, and Luke Darrow.
Preceding her in death are her grandparents, parents, and beloved husband.
A visitation for Joy Sorden will be held at East Lawn Funeral Home on Wednesday August 21, 2024 at 12:30 PM with memorial services beginning at 1:30 PM. Committal services will follow at East Lawn Memorial Gardens Cemetery. Arrangements are through East Lawn Funeral Home 1102 Airport Road, Bloomington, IL 61704.
