I am so very sorry to have learned of Mr. Willis's passing.  I attended IWU music camp in the late 60's and have fond memories of "Uncle Maury."   He was dearly loved by the students who attended.

May God bless you and your family in this time of sorrow. Many will miss him. I will always cherish the good memories I have from our long friendship.

I remember Mr. Willis as the marching band director when I was a percussionist at IWU from 1964-1968. I was always amazed at the intricate formations he created, and his patience with us as we practiced on the field, with many of us—including me—occasionally(!) turning in the wrong direction.  It looks as if he had a thriving long life, sharing his gifts with many. He might have been interested to know that I'm a charter member of the Kishwaukee Valley Concert Band, which is rehearsing for the first concert of our 29th season next month. The music goes on....

I met Mr. Willis in 1974 at the IWU Music Camp and returned in 1975.  He was my marching band instructor from '76 - '78 when he retired.  Mr. Willis was a true professional.  Once I began teaching, he was the sight reading adjudicator at band festival and it was an honor to lead my first band in his hearing!  God blessed him with 97 years!
