Max Culver

Max K. Culver of Bloomington IL passed July 13, 2026 at ARC of Normal. Max was born February 9,1946 to Clifford and Estelle Rost Culver near Marshfield Missouri. During his youth he worked on the family dairy farm, explored the Ozark hills with buddies and sneaked into nearby country school at age 3.

Max graduated from Marshfield (MO) High School and Drury College in Springfield MO catching the theatre set, lighting and sound design bug early. With an MA from the University of Colorado, he became Instructor/Technical Director for Iowa State University Theatre in Ames IA. There he met and married Ellen Seeck of Ames and Keystone IA August 26, 1972. Max completed his PhD in Theatre at the University of Illinois. He held theatre teaching/technical director positions at Illinois Wesleyan University Theatre in Bloomington, the Krannert Center in Urbana then Illinois State University. His later career was with companies in the design of lighting systems for theatres, churches, schools and businesses. Max was most proud of mentoring students in technical theatre career paths. Max and Ellen retired in 2009 enjoying travel adventures and home and garden projects.

Surviving are his wife Ellen and in-laws Brenda Culver of Olney, IL, Dale Seeck of Keystone IA and Dean and Leanna Seeck of Austin MN and their families.

Max was preceded in death by his parents, brother Ray Culver, infant sister Evelyn, and

in-laws Wilbert and Millie Seeck, David Seeck and Jennie Seeck.

Our intelligent, boisterous, creative Max braved but succumbed to Alzheimer’s dementia. The family appreciated amazing caregivers at Arcadia Care, ARC of Normal and The Care Team hospice during his final two months and Synergy Home Care prior to that.

Friends are invited to a 4-6 pm visitation Monday July 27 at East Lawn Funeral Home,1102 Airport Rd, Bloomington. Interment will be later at the Keystone IA Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, consider memorials to Sarah’s Garden, David Davis Mansion Foundation, 1000 Monroe, Bloomington IL or a cause of the donor’s choice.
