Dear Macesich Family,

I was sorry to read about Mr. Macesich's death.  My contact with him goes clear back to 1962 when he started teaching chemistry at U-High.  I had married that summer and by October was pregnant (with James) and had morning sickness.  Since I was married, I requested to do my student teaching at U-High.    

I was a math major and a physical science minor.  That meant I only had one general chemistry class for a year and one semester of organic chemistry at ISU.  I figured that U-High would give me a general science class and 2 math classes for student teaching. 

Yes, I was assigned 2 math classes, but was given an advanced chemistry class instead of a general science one.  Mr. Macesich was my student teaching supervisor.  I'm sure that the basic general chemistry class at U-High was equivalent to the one I had taken at ISU.  Needless to say, I was overwhelmed.  The class loved to raise questions and I think I was constantly telling them how interesting each question was and how we needed to work together to research the answer.  On top of this, I would sometimes teach a class and afterwards would be vomiting in the restroom.

Mr. Macesich could have made completing my student teaching requirement difficult and impossible.  Instead, he was very kind and understanding and did everything possible to help me complete my assignment.   I will always be grateful for his sensitivity and support.
