Our beloved Nick was tragically taken from us on Saturday, September 23rd, 2023, by a selfish, and senseless act of violence. At just 19 years old, Nicholas had a lifetime ahead of him that was cut too short by this tragedy.
Nicholas Michael Zapata was born on June 28th, 2004, in Seattle Washington to Robert Zapata and Elizabeth Bane.
Nick's love of life and his contagious laugh is what he will be remembered for. Nick loved to crack jokes, make noises, and laugh just so you knew he was there. His smile could light up a room and he was the life of the party! His smile and jovial spirit will be missed every day.
Nick's love of football was very prominent in his life. Nick started playing at the age of 8 and always loved tackling. Since that moment he decided that he was only going to play on defense. Nick played with the Bloomington- Normal Cougars Youth Football until age 14 and then played all fours years as a Normal West Wildcat until he graduated in 2023.
Nick's memory will forever be cherished by his parents: Elizabeth Bane and Robert Zapata, Bonus Parents: Krystal Zapata and Joshua Bane, Siblings; Austin Zapata (17), Natalie Bane (12), Alexander Zapata (12), Benjamin Zapata (12), and Sean Zapata (4) Grandparents Edwin (Kim) Zapata, David (Susan) Bane and Larry (Robyn) Reaves. As well as by many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. He is preceded in death by his grandparents Rick and Sherri Rand, Grandmother Vicenta Flores and brother Shane Zapata.
On Friday September 29th, the Normal West football team will be having a moment of silence prior to their home game. Game starts at 7:00 pm.
On Saturday September 30th, the family will be having a lantern release. If you would like to bring letters, candles and photos to the family or share memories of Nick please join us at Maxwell Park at 6pm.
Family and friends are asked to wear any shade of purple to honor Nick's life at the vigil, as this was Nick favorite color.
