Roger was born June 11, 1947 in Bloomington, IL to Jarvis Lee and Beulah Edith (Ringenberg) Swaner. He married the love of his life Jennifer S. Werre on August 15, 1970 in Grand Forks, North Dakota.
Roger served his country for 20 years in the Air Force and Air National Guard. He was a very proud veteran. He was later employed at St. Johns Lutheran in Bloomington. He was a quiet man until he got to know people. Once he knew you, he loved you. He could stretch his 5 minute Easter story to thirty minutes or longer just to see who would listen to the whole thing. If he had a twinkle in his eye, that meant that he was going to tell one of his epic stories. We will forever miss his smile and gentle ways.
Roger had a strong faith in Jesus, and spoke often that he wasn’t afraid because his Lord was guiding him. His family is finding great comfort in that, as we know he’s been guided home.
He is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Jennifer; daughter, Laura Swaner of Bloomington, IL; dog, Delia; cats Scott and Harve; sister, Mary (Loren) Hodgson of Forrest, IL; mother-in-law, Lois Werre; brother-in-law, Tom (Akemi) Werre; nieces, Amy Shockey and Michele Silver; nephews, Will Werre and Steven Swaner; and many great nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Scott Swaner, nephew, Jeff Hodgson; brother – in-law, Ted Werre and great-nephew, Travis Steidinger.
The family would like to thank everyone who has supported them during this time and for the love that people have shown. The staff of the Family Care Center at OSF St. Joseph Medical Center, OSF hospice and the staff at Heritage Health Care, Normal provided wonderful care. The family would like to give special thanks to Winnifred Werre for her love, care and presence during his illness and to Greg and Joanne Randolph for their support and love. They would also like to thank the owners and staff at the Garden of Paradise for their kind and compassionate care.
“ He wouldn’t be missed so much if he wasn’t loved so much”
Cremation rites will be accorded by East Lawn Funeral Home in Bloomington. Private family services will be at a later date. Memorials may be directed to Pet Central Helps! 360 Wylie Drive, Suite 720, Normal IL 61761.
