

Susan Carol Perhai, 77, resident of Sugar Creek Alzheimer’s Special Care Center in Normal, passed away Tuesday, February 13, 2018 at 4:45 p.m. at the home surrounded by her family. She was born August 27, 1940, the daughter of Miles and Joanne Sperry Hanna. She married James Perhai on April 30, 1960 in Appleton, Wisconsin. He survives.
Susan graduated from the Wisconsin State School for the Deaf in Delavan, Wisconsin. She was a founding member of the Bloomington-Normal Deaf Club, which started in 1965 and still operates today. Susan served on the board of directors for the Center for Independent Living, and most recently attended First Assembly Church in Normal. She worked for 27 years at Country Companies in Bloomington, retiring in 1996. Over the years, she traveled to Australia, Fiji, South America, New Zealand, and the far-off states of Alaska and Hawaii. In her spare time, she enjoyed sports including golf, tennis, softball, and bowling.
In addition to her husband, Susan is survived by her son, David (Christina) Perhai of Bloomington; four grandchildren, Hannah Perhai of Champaign; Joshua Perhai of Bloomington; Mary Perhai of Normal; and Abigail Perhai of Bloomington; and three brothers, John (Aoy) Hanna of Honolulu, Hawaii; Joel (Sally) Hanna of LaCrosse, Wisconsin, and Timothy (Lisa) Hanna of Appleton, Wisconsin.
She is preceded in death by her parents.
The family wishes to express its appreciation to the staff of Sugar Creek Alzheimer’s Special Care Center in Normal for their excellent care over the past two and a half years.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, February 17th at 1:30 p.m. at East Lawn Funeral Home in Bloomington. Entombment will follow at East Lawn Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be held from noon to 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
