An Army veteran of World War II, serving in occupied Japan, as well as being a Korean War veteran, he was proud of his service to this country. In his later years, he liked to recount some of his many army experiences to others including traveling through the bombed-out city of Hiroshima on a troop train.
He held a bachelor’s and master’s degree in agriculture and education from Purdue University. While attending college he was active in music programs and was involved with The Wesley Foundation, where he met the love of his life. He and Carolyn (Yates) Morrison eloped and were married January 3, 1951. Their love affair continued for over 56 years until her death on August 26, 2007.
Twenty years of his 30 year teaching career were spent in the Monroe County Community schools where he taught science and horticulture. A talented gardener and plant expert, he was known for having beautiful gardens and landscapes everywhere he lived. A self-taught amateur genealogist, he and Carolyn spent many happy retirement years traveling around the country doing family research. This research often yielded amazing stories of Revolutionary War ancestors and family lines traced as far back as the early 1600’s.
