Don was born in Chicago, Illinois to Rev. Harold and Hattie Edith (Hooker) Small on June 15, 1930. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean conflict. He graduated from Indiana State Teachers College in 1959 and in 1960 where he obtained his bachelor and master degrees respectively. In 1981, he received his doctorate of education degree from Indiana University. His career included being a teacher, principal, professor, and executive director of the Indiana Association of School Principals. Two colleagues and he created the Riley Kids Caring and Sharing Program which has raised 11 million dollars since its inception to support children and their philanthropic efforts.
He was a recipient of two Sagamores of the Wabash for his dedication to Indiana's children. He also received the Key to San Diego and was a Kentucky Colonel, also for his work in education in those states. Don was most happy when surrounded by family, friends, and his art projects. He volunteered many hours at IU Health Bloomington Hospital.
He was a member of Sherwood Oaks Christian Church.
Survivors include his wife of nearly 61 years, Mary Jean (Haug) Small, children Dr. Kris Small, Lori Small, and Amy (Small) Cazzell, grandchildren Megan Vernon, Sean Small, Ian Cazzell, and Liam Small, and brother David Small.
Funeral Services are scheduled on Saturday, June, 21, 2104 at 1:00 PM in Sherwood Oaks Christian Church, 2700 E. Rogers Rd, with Pastor Tom Ellsworth officiating. Visitation is scheduled prior to services on Saturday from 11:00 AM – 1:00 PM in the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Deremiah-Frye Mortuary, Green and Harrell Chapel.
