How do you put a lifetime of memories into a few words? From my earliest memories, John Allen was in the church. He was not only a Godly man but a tremendous influence in my life. I worked with him at Griffith Motor Express and then later at Consolidated Freightways. I sang with him on several occasions. This world was a better place because he was here. It is hard to think of him being gone but, thank God, he has gone home.

Since my earlier post I found this Bloomington newspaper clipping from the 1950s showing Johnny (he is the tallest one in the teen boys quartet), myself and other First Church musicians. Perhaps Johnny's family will enjoy seeing these pictures. Those were good years! We had an unbelievably large and talented youth group and Johnny was a big part of it. First Church was always eager to have the teenagers participate in the services. I still remember Johnny's first solo,DOWN IN THE DEPTHS, where the chorus just keeps going lower and lower and even though Johnny was just a teenager, his poise and beautiful voice just simply blew the congregation away.

With memories of a special friend...

Our sincere sympathy goes out to the family of John Allen. I always loved his voice, when I was involved in a quartet with him in the 70's. He was truly a man of God, and I had the utmost respect for him.

John was always a delight and so kind when he came to visit us at work. The Whitehall branch of the IU Credit Union will miss his smile and his stories. It's been wonderful reading the memories from his friends. All of our thoughts are with his friends and family.

I have lost a very old and treasured friend but I am sure Heaven is rejoicing! Johnny and I were just babies when we were first taken to First Church by our parents. Later we attended Hunter school and BHS together. We sang often at church in our teen age years. He was well blessed with a one-of-a-kind bass voice. Later, as teenagers, we both sadly mourned the loss of another dear friend and singing partner that we had grown up with, David Neal. In 1959 Johnny was in my wedding party. Many very special, treasured memories come to mind when I think of Johnny Allen!

So today, we send love and prayers to Johnny's family.
