Obituary of Mary Elizabeth Somma
Mary Elizabeth (Tarter) Somma passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Friday, August 12th, 2022 at Hearthstone Health Campus. Mary was born in Smithville, IN on July 10th, 1927 to Walter and Alva (Williams) Tarter. She was a graduate of Smithville High School, Class of 1945. While in high school, Mary was offered the opportunity to assist the war effort by helping make products for the military at the local RCA factory. She also went to Washington D.C. to be a secretary for the Navy. It was there she met the love of her life, Joseph Somma, a native of New York who was stationed in D.C. at the time. The couple got married and spent most of their lives living and raising a family in New York. They eventually retired in Bloomington, IN. Survivors include Mary’s four children, Donna Digiuseppe, Debbie (Charlie) Craig, Denise (Anthony) Mondelli, and Doreen (Troy) Salyers; grandchildren, Andrew Digiuseppe, Joseph (Bonnie) Digiuseppe, C.J. (Melanie) Craig, Gina (Jerrod) Paris, Anthony Mondelli, Michael Mondelli, Nicholas (Ashley) Mondelli, Jeremy Salyers, and Jenna (Tyler) Allam; great grandchildren, Izabella and Dayton Paris, Taylor, Riley, and Michael Digiuseppe, Bryce, Benjamin and Braylen Craig, Anthony, Adrian, Alivia, and Marcella Mondelli, Levi Salyers, and Walker and baby Allam; and many nieces and nephews. Mary is preceded in death by her husband Joseph Somma; her parents Alva and Walter Tarter; and her brothers, Charles Tarter, Walter Jr. Tarter, Donald Tarter and son in law, Andy Digiuseppe. Mary was known for her loving and caring heart; her family was her world. She loved sewing and was part of the Monroe Co. Sewing guild. She was also part of the Women’s Club at St. John’s Catholic Church, which she was a long time parishioner of. A visitation will be held at Deremiah-Frye Mortuary (700 W. Gourley Pike Bloomington, IN 47404) on Monday, August 15th, 2022 from 3-8pm. A funeral service will be held at the funeral home on Tuesday August 16th at 11am followed by a burial at Smithville Cemetery. The family would like to thank Hearthstone Health Campus for all the love and support they provided to Mary in the past year.
