Carmen Joanicot passed away peacefully at home on October 25, 2022 at the age of 92 with her three children and several grandchildren by her side. She was a loving mother, grandmother (Abuela and Tita as she was called), great grandmother, and friend.
Carmen was born in Havana, Cuba to Emiliano Sardiñas and Maria Flores de Quiñónez where she lived for 39 years and received her Master’s in Education. She married Oscar Joanicot in 1954 and together they immigrated to the United States in 1969, with their daughters Maria and Ana at which time they settled in Boca Raton, FL and later had their son Oscar. Carmen started the first Hispanic Ministry in Boca Raton at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church in 1979 and remained a very active parishioner until her death. She was well known in the community for her unyielding faith and the hundreds of children she raised in her home daycare for over 32 years.
Carmen was preceded in death by her husband Oscar in 2010 and is survived by her children: Maria Orozco, Ana Nelson, and Oscar Joanicot (Duvie); 9 grandchildren - Angelica Villarreal, Robert James (Stephanie), Christopher James (Meredith), Jacob Joanicot, Rene Villarreal, John James, Joshua Joanicot, Austin Van Meter (Abi), Mariessa Nelson and one great grandson, Jayden Joanicot; her sister Asela Valdés (Simeon) and many nieces and nephews.
A Mass to celebrate her life will take place on November 5, 2022 at 1:30pm at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church, 370 SW 3rd Street, Boca Raton, FL. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Parkinson’s Foundation at www.Parkinson.org.
