In the darkest of sorrows, there is alway=s a glimmer of light -Stan. 


How can I begin to tell you all what my grandmother has meant to me throughout my life? Maybe foolishly I thought I'd never have to stand here and try to explain. I was a pretty lucky girl to have a woman like her as such a constant in my life. 

Some of my favorite memories of her are from when I was a kid. When life was simpler and family was more closely knit... The big green house with the green and white fence is where the foundation of my love for her was laid. I can still see her sitting in her room off the side of the house, knitting or watching her soaps, while I was swimming in the pool, listening to the trucks rumble by. It always felt like those days would never end. Stealing snap peas from her garden and picking grapes from her vines. Those were the days... 

My mother asked us all to write something about mammy to say today... 

How do I begin to tell you what she meant to me ..... ? 

Mammy was Christmas morning and the 4th of July.  She was your favorite meal on your birthday. She was a fresh pot of coffee when you walked through the door, the smell of meatballs frying on the stove.  She was the warmth and comfort of a mom.. Mammy was the sting of a wooden spoon and the softness of a knitted blanket. She was the kind of lady everyone loved to be around. She had sass and charisma.. and my god, was she beautiful ... She was the total package. 

I don't know where we go from here. Mammy was the heart and soul of our family She was the glue that held it all together. Losing her is like losing a piece of my heart. I try and take comfort that she is in heaven with God, reunited with Pops and family that has gone before.. it still just feels impossible. 

I pray that she always knew what she meant to me. I pray that I always made her proud. I'l love you forever Mammy, and I'll never forget all the beautiful things that were you ....

I stayed behind this morning after all the family filed out of my grandparent's house.

I needed a few more moments to write a statement to present at the memorial service. 

Apparently, the tradition is to wait until the very last moment to prepare something so big that it can encapsulate one's life. 

And anyone who knows me - knows I like to prepare, so it landed funny - that this big part of this process was left to the ultimate last second.

This made me realize that I don't want to do that anymore. 

I think we should all know - all the time - what we mean to each other. 

So, I'll start today - you all mean so very, very much to me. 

Every, single, one of you 

Those that made it here today and all of those that could not attend because of distance or cost...

I love and appreciate you all. 

Without folks like our great aunts and uncles, great grandparents, grandfathers, and grandmothers to bind us so tightly, 

it becomes our job to keep memories, not tabs

to record the highlights, and not so much the bloopers. 

- although admittedly - in this family -the bloopers can be very - very entertaining

but, we must root for the best days, and not get stuck replaying the worst. 

My grandparents may not be here any longer, but their door, it remains open at my house. 

And their traditions and stories remain vivid in my life.  

I encourage each of you to honor their memory by always making room at your table, and in your heart for just one more. 

because there should be no limit to generosity 

and I guarantee you - there is always enough food.

I miss you, Mammy. I love you so much. 

I'll miss coming over, having coffee with you. Sitting at the table and having crazy conversations about all the madness that was always going on within our family. 

I'll miss seeing you they up a cigarette in the back room while you watch our shows and scratch your chin while always holding a cup of coffee. 

I'll miss helping move your furniture in the house just because you want it to look different and nice. And if I am honest, I now do the same thing at my own home. I loved to move things around. And each time I do, I think of you, and that makes me smile. 
 
I'll miss you asking me to try the pasta sauce. Your cooking would always make me feel so at home. 

I'll miss seeing you every day for the rest of my life. 

I don't know where I'd be today without you. I've been through some tough times in my life, and you and Pop were always there to help me and pick me up. 

You mean the world to me and it won't be the same without you. 

I know you're at peace in heaven looking down and me. And I just want to say, Good-bye Mammy. I will always, always love you and miss you.

In the eight plus years that I have been part of this family, Mammy was always one of my go-to's for advice or just a shoulder to lean on. She considered me one of her granddaughters. 

When I was going through the hardest part of my life, she was there. Knowing that my mother made me a special dish on my birthday each year before she passed, Mam wanted to keep that tradition alive, so she made me Carbonara each birthday since. 

She loved to cook. And her food was always amazing. She would say; cooking for an army was the only option. And although she never did get me to eat fish, we did share many cakes! Yellow cake, homemade, with chocolate frosting. 

Always willing to help us out. She opened her home at the drop of a dime. When we'd call to say we're coming over, she never said no, and she always seemed so happy to have us. Especially Gabby!

Gabby, was the twinkle in her eye ever since she was born. She loved her mammy and mammy she loved her. When they were together, they were happy as can be. 

I will miss her voice and laugh... 
I will miss watching Family Feud and Dancing with the Stars with her...
I will miss going to the store for her...
I will miss celebrating the holidays with her. Especially Easter and Christmas Eve. ..
I will miss sleeping over when I felt lonely...

I could go on forever, the list of things I will miss is endless. But God has called you home, and now you're with Poppy forever. 

Heaven has gained another angel.

My heart is heavy today because I have learned that Julie Mercadante, a very special person in my life to me, went to be home with the Lord last night. 

A person who along with her wonderful husband Sal took me into their home and treated me as a member of their family at one of the lowest points in my life. 

But more importantly, Julie's faithful and loving sharing of the gospel with me led me into a personal relationship with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and had changed my life and my family forever. 

I will be eternally grateful to her and Sal, and although I grieve today, I am comforted and confident in the fact that I will see her again. 

Please pray that God brings comfort to her family and her friends! John 11:25-26 " Jesus said "I am the resurrection and the life; He that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live. And Whosever liveth and believeth in me shall never die..."

I'm so sorry for the loss of my mother-in-law. 

I gained a whole new value on family. Traditions were the core of my mother-in law's world. Unity, laughter, and closeness among family and friends were central. 

Acceptance was; "saying it like it is" while your heart always knew it was an act of love. 

I'm thankful to have entered into such a powerful family. I will miss you very much, and I send courage to all those at a loss.

So very sorry for your loss. She'll live in your heart and all the beautiful memories forever.

I witnessed the friendship between my mom and her friend, affectionately known as " Julie" only because my Polish/ German mother, couldn't pronounce Giuliana Mercadante

As we are left behind, our only hope is that we can keep the legacy going.

The warmth and love of family burst out of your heart every time we interacted, and it was noted in the way you call me Mom. 

I always meant to thank your mom, and tell her how my daughter loved her cooking.

 This morning I heard the terrible news of Giuliana's passing. I really cannot believe it! A great sadness pervades me. 

She loved me so much. She loved my daughters, Elizabeth, Valeria, and Domiziana, so much. And, I loved her so very much!

The many beautiful moments of when we came to America flow from my eyes. I see her. I hear her voice. I lost an older sister, a young mother!

Now she has reunited in Heaven with her beloved Sal, with Filippo and Fiorentina!

I embrace you and your sisters and all of you from your beautiful family in this very sad, terrible moment.

Unfortunately, I will not be able to attend the funeral. But one day I will want to bring flowers to her grave, I promise.

Mom was the core of our lives. Mom loved two things. Her family and food.  These two things are what brought us all together.  

She was the best cook ever. We never got gifts from our mom. Her gift was making us a special meal, every birthday she’d ask what to you want me to make you. Whether it was homemade gnocchi or pasta with meatballs,she put her love into it.  It always felt like a hug.

She hated to say she was sorry if she fought with you , so instead she’d cook and call you to come over and we knew that was her apology.  We wouldn’t talk about it, we’d just eat act like nothing every happened.

My mom was such a strong, talented person.  She cooked, she, painted, she sewed, and crocheted. She loved to rearrange her house, that included breaking down walls and building new ones. 

She once tried to make her kitchen into a setting from Italy. I came home and found her standing on the kitchen counter putting up pvc piping that had Lattice attached to it.  She hung ivy from it and found all of these little Italian items that she hung from it.  

The kitchen didn’t have a window. So next  to the frig there was a wall, she thought that it she’d create a window, so she put up a window sill and hung  up a curtain. She also made pajama out of the same fabric, so when she sat there drinking coffe in those pajamas she looked like the curtain.

She finished it off by painting a setting that had flowers and trees.  Every time we sat there I couldn’t help but laugh about how crazy and creative that was.

When my mom was in the hospital I’d visit and we would talk and laugh. I think she told me she loved more times in those two months than She did in my whole life.  I can’t help but think that When God called her home he still got the better end of the deal.  

I will alway miss you mom.

Mammy was, and will always be, the heart of this family. She was a remarkable soul, real, full of life, plenty of opinions, and bursting with Mammy wisdom. I’m thankful to my husband for bringing such a powerhouse of a woman into my life and I am honored to celebrate her memory here today.

For 15 years, in true Italian Grandmother fashion, you could never eat enough though; and this is probably where I infuriated her the most. Dating, then marrying into an Italian family, can be quite the shock… especially for your stomach. One plate, two plates, anything less than three and:
 
“What’s the matter, you don’t like it?!”
“Did you eat already?!”
“Eat some more.”
“Take some with you.”
 
Those Mammy quotes will forever be etched into my memory because, to her, food was love; and she LOVED.
 
For 15 years my answers were always the same though.
 
“I love it, I swear!”
“No, I promise that I ate some.”
“Two plates actually.”
“My stomach is literally pasta and meatballs at this point, Mams!”
 
And yet, no answer was ever right unless it was “Sure, I’ll take some more.”
 
In fact, I’m fairly certain that I only redeemed myself by providing a great-granddaughter that she could stuff to her heart’s delight. Another mouth to feed, another life to share the love.
 
So, I guess, despite the heartache and the tears, what she would’ve wanted most today would be for us to remember all that she gave us. All of the love and laughter. All of the holidays spent at her house. All of the times sitting at her round table. Everything. And, upon reflection, I guess now my answers have actually changed.
 
“Finally Mams, I’ve got room for some more.”
 
“Some more of your fantastic cooking.”
“Some more stories.”
“Some more marveling at how your house managed to, yet again, be rearranged entirely.”
“Some more coffee and laughs at the table.”
“Some more of you singing and spoiling the kids.”
 
And especially:
“Some more time with you.”

We are so sorry for your loss; a loss for all of us who had the privilege of knowing your mom. I'll always remember her as:

A straight shooter who told things like they were, not the way people wanted to hear them.

A fun-loving Great-Grand-Mammy.

A transplanted New Yorker who never lost her wonderful New York State of Mind,

Out of your big Florida Family, the one I enjoyed being with the most for a chat around the table.

Stay mad.  It will help you get through the days ahead and ease some of the pain.

I do remember her, on Easter lunch 2014. Surrounded by her beautiful large family and by a huge amount of delicious food. We talked of Italy and of memories from the past. May she have great meal in heaven. Love to her family. 

This news hits me deep in my heart, that summer together, every year I wanted to go back to visit you but they never succeeded.

A message from Amsterdam;

It's very cold here at the moment, but I woke up in a cozy bed. Covered in a duvet, and surrounded by faux fur rugs and a beautiful knit blanket -white and red, with little flowers - to keep me warm. You know, your grandma made that blanket for me.

I love it because it holds such nice memories, but also because it looks like a seventies boho queens dream. Which is probably what I said to her, and absolutely why she gave it to me. 

I remember my time there very well. Hanging out at your grandparent's house in Boca -always full of family members running around.... such great fun.
 
Your nan had this room; I’m not sure what the English word is [sunroom], it was by the garden. And she said she would sit there to "get away from the great grandkids for a second." (Which I thought was hilarious, hahaha). 

If I remember correctly, that’s where she would sit and knit all those blankets. She would just sit, in peace, knitting and smoking. Or maybe it was me doing all the smoking, either way, it was real nice. 

I remember her, not only as warm and funny but also so fabulous and Italian. How she looked and carried herself. She sat there like the queen of her castle ~~ a really, really cool lady.  

It was very special how your family took us in. They we're all so incredibly kind and fun. Just take a person in and then just treat them like family in the sense that they make you feel at home; like its the most natural thing in the world. Like: Of course you're here you weird dutch person! And then you're just part of the family for a bit. 

Your grandma was something else. And I remember her all the time because of who she was and because of that little blanket that has been part of my home now for many years now.

When I read this morning that you're nan has passed it made me very sad. And I'm very, very sorry for your loss. I imagine everyone will miss her a lot. 

I'm lucky I got to know her for a bit. 

Miss you McGuyver. Who's going to saw down my walls? Love your favorite son-in-law. 

My Dear Aunt Julie Andrew, as I sit here writing this, I have tears in my eyes. You have been an intricate part of my life and it breaks my heart to know that I can no longer call you, or come visit you, and longer hear your voice. We've made so many wonderful, precious memories together from the days on Kimball Ave to my trips to Boca. You will be missed terribly. This feels so unreal. Give my Mom and Dad a big hug and kiss from me and Malani. I love, Aunt Julie Andrew. 💕

I will never forget the precious memories that you created for me. I remember being as young as 4, and getting all dressed up so that you could take me shopping and to breakfast, and then"visiting" 

No one could ever top the Big Christmas Eve's you would do for the family, and how you cooked for an army...those memories are so sweet and  fresh in my head as it were yesterday...

 Then just random  things come to my mind, like when u would make me tomatoes smashed on the round italian bread, and as easy as it may have seemed to do, no one could do it quite like you. 
You had a heart of gold  Aunt Julie, and you touched so many people through your generousity and kindness. I am so honored and blessed to be able to have had you as a godmother and aunt. You have no idea how much I will miss you. Thank you for everything, I am so grateful for all your love. I love you and will cherish you forever





Julie and I spent time together as I was grieving the loss of my mom. She was always there for me and I enjoyed her witty thoughts about life and family. My kids loved her cooking the egg plant parm and chicken cutlets. Yum Yum Yum!

She shared with me how much she loved her family and how she was always there for them. I will miss her tremendously, I know she is happy and at peace being home with God she often shared with me her strong belief in God. She is an Angel and will continue to watch over her family  from up above.

Growing up together was always fun with the Gattucci's.  We laughed and we cried together and shared many happy memories.  Ringo,  Snowball, Fluffy  the floppy Easter hats, Florence's home made sicilian pizza,  getting our hair cuts from the basement with Giuliana and lets not forget Sal, and all fun memories shared up on The Rock Terrace.  I remember Julie as a beautiful person.  She was someone who cared about people and truly lover her Family.  I last saw her over the Summer of 2017.  She was cooking in the kitchen as she always loved to but she would never admit it and boy she could cook.  

My heart goes out the her Family.  We will truly miss her.
