Gregory E. Dorsey of Boca Raton, Florida passed away peacefully on June 12, 2021 at the age of 68 while surrounded by his loved ones in the warmth and comfort of his home after a courageous battle with cancer.
What Greg cherished most in his life were his family, friends, mentoring, and unwavering service to others. His humility and strong faith allowed him to persevere, yet also accept, in the most trying of circumstances. Greg believed strongly in creating second chances, and the importance of paying a gift forward. He selflessly guided countless members of various support communities and his own family through life’s challenges to find a path toward healing, forgiveness, and renewed growth. He did so in a way that was uniquely his, with quips of profound wisdom guised with understated simplicity. “Greggie-isms”, if you will - like the story of how the cucumber became a pickle - often used to encourage those struggling with addiction to embrace their own higher power to change their lives.
Greg had a penchant for over-tipping and the use of superlatives like “spectacular” and “mah-vahlous” when anyone demonstrated goodness while performing a task, whether simple or complex. He also loved his condiments -- mustard, ketchup, pickle relish, pepperoncinis!!
His passion for service could only be matched by his love of the ocean. Although he never owned a boat, he loved to surf as a young man, and taught his sons how to fish, snorkel, and scuba dive. He worked as a mate engineer on several power yachts, captained his own vessel-Big Story, managed a boat yard in Fort Lauderdale for a time, and in recent years began to respect the craft of building wooden boats.
Greg worked in the power generation industry for over forty years and was progressively promoted into advanced levels of senior management, ultimately leading several divisions of one of the highest-performing Kohler generator distributorships in the U.S.
Greg is survived by his wife of nearly 45 years, Vickie; his sons Brian (Stefano) and Matt (Jenny); his mother-in-law, Rose; his sister, Cindy Cummins (Barry); nieces and nephews Melinda Dennis (Greg), Randy Cummins (Madison), Alex Nygren (Mackenzie), Ashley, and Chris McCafferty (Christina); grand nieces and nephews Aurora, James, Wyatt, Otis, Henry, Molly, and Theodore; and many other cherished family and friends.
Greg will be honored in a private service for family and invited guests.
