Florence Jean Vander Werf, known simply as Jean to all who loved her, passed peacefully into the presence of her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on July 14, 2025, just six days after celebrating her 95th birthday.
Born in Chicago, Illinois on July 8, 1930, Jean was predeceased by her husband, Henry Vander Werf, and her daughter, Bonnie Jean Poje (Vander Werf). She is survived by her children: Ken Vander Werf of Palm City, Florida; Paul (Kim) Vander Werf of Stillwater, Minnesota; and Barbara Vander Werf of Atlantis, Florida.
Jean was “Nana” to nine grandchildren and sixteen great-grandchildren. Her grandchildren include Karie; Michael, whose children are Kayla, Katie, and Kyler; Kris; Heidi (Daniel) ; Scott (Rebecca), father to Liberty, Ivory, and Maverick; Katie (Josh), mother to Emayah, Olivet, Harvest, and Nazareth; Andie (Jon), whose children are Eric and Peyton; Taylor (Reagan), mother to Eleanor and Johanna; and Joe (Kelsey), whose children are Donovan and Kallie Jean—the youngest, and lovingly named in Jean’s honor.
Jean spent many years in church administration, where she was known for her diligence, efficiency, and unwavering commitment to doing things right. Affectionately nicknamed “FloJo,” she had a spark of impatience and a deep reservoir of love. Her friends and family cherished her sharp wit, quick smile, and strong spirit.
Later in life, Jean made her home at St. Andrews Retirement Village in Boca Raton, Florida, where she found a joyful and active community. She especially enjoyed volunteering by folding napkins for meals and attending Tai Chi classes with her dearest friends. Though she traveled less in her later years, Jean never lost her curiosity or her joyful spirit.
Jean's legacy is one of faith, family, and fierce devotion. She will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.
