Jeanette "Jan" T. Baldwin passed away peacefully on Friday, August 7th, under the loving care her long-time caregiver, Zadie Paul.
Jan was born on February 9, 1932, in Detroit, Michigan, to Argia Rudy and Felix Torri. She graduated from East Detroit High School, where her talent earned her a scholarship to attend art school in New York. She later attended cosmetology school and worked alongside her mother in her salon, following in her footsteps and building a lifelong career around beauty and connection.
In 1960, Jan married Robert E. Baldwin in Berkley, Michigan. Shortly after, the couple moved to South Florida, joining her brother's family as early residents of Boca Raton. In 1964, Jan became the owner and operator of Salon de Elegancia at the Boca Raton Resort and Club, a business she ran for more than 40 years. She loved her work and treasured the thousands of clients and friends she came to know over the decades. After retirement, she continued to work, establishing a new work family who she adored.
Jan was deeply involved in her community, active with the Boca Raton Historical Society, the Boca Raton Community Hospital, and the local social scene. She had a genuine appreciation for the beauty of the city she called home for so long and valued the beautiful view from her 16th floor apartment. She loved to entertain and so looked forward to her annual Holiday Boat Parade parties. In her later years, she moved to Harbour's Edge, where she reconnected with old friends and made many new ones.
An artist at heart throughout her life, Jan devoted much of her later years to creating pen and ink drawings, oil paintings, and watercolors, works that continue to bring joy to the friends and family who treasure them.
Jan was preceded in death by her parents, Argia Rudy and Felix Torri, her husband, Robert E. Baldwin, and her brother, Lawrence Torri, Sr. She is survived by her nephew, Lawrence (Larry) Torri, his wife Kathy, and their two children, Alex and Olivia, and dear family friends Nancy Petrucciani-Turik, Daniel Turik, Sarah Jane Petrucciani-Andrews, and Grace Ann Petrucciani-Deisher.
The family would like to extend heartfelt thanks to Jan's devoted caregivers over the last several years — Zadie, Karleen, Brittany, and Millicent — for their compassion and care.
Jan will be remembered for her artistry, her warmth, and the countless lives she touched over a lifetime spent building beauty into the world around her.
