

He was predeceased by his parents Adolf and Maria Zander. He is survived by his beloved wife Christa Irene Luther, his children Barbara (Brian Burke), Christian (Kay Zander) and Grandchildren Oliver Burke, Kylie Burke and Nickolas Zander.
Born on January 29, 1937, in Moenchengladbach, Germany, Josef grew up during and after WWII. The resilience, determination and work ethic forged during those years became defining qualities throughout his life. He had strong values a steady presence and was always committed to his family.
After completing his education and earning a degree in banking through Deutsche Bank, Josef emigrated to the U.S. and was soon drafted into the U.S. Army. His military service brought him back to Germany where he was stationed in Giessen and met Christa, the woman who would become his wife and lifelong partner.
He came to NY with Christa in 1963 before moving several times during their 64 year marriage including to New Jersey, Louisiana, Pennsylvania, Minnesota, (back to) New Jersey and eventually Georgia. Joe and Christa built their beautiful retirement home in St. Marys, GA on the Crooked River where they enjoyed many beautiful sunsets.
Josef was an avid soccer fan rooting for his hometown team in the Bundesliga – Borussia Moenchengladbach. He was also a longtime member and supporter of the German Soccer Club in Astoria New York – S.C. Eintracht where he met many of his oldest friends.
He had a successful 50 year career in sales and marketing mostly in the Specialty Food Industry representing many brands internationally. He received many awards for his work and was inducted into the Specialty Food Association Hall of Fame in 2016 for his significant contributions to the growth of the specialty food industry.
He enjoyed traveling both for business and pleasure. He crossed 5 continents from Alaska to Africa and India to Iceland. He crossed through the Panama Canal and around the southern tips of South America and Africa. Joe was always planning their next cruise!
He facilitated several family trips around the globe with his wife, children and grandchildren encouraging them to take in the local sites, tastes and sounds.
