Moved to Westland, Michigan 1960, to Boca Raton, Florida 1978.
She attended Denby High School in Detroit, Michigan. She quit in the eleventh grade but returned one year later after realizing her mother was right about no decent jobs without a high school diploma. She graduated with a 3.5 GPA and lettered in tennis, field hockey & basketball.
She loved all sports. She was a runner up in the city tennis tourney in Detroit, Michigan, coached basketball at Neighborhood Club in Grosse Point Woods, Michigan. Played golf with Pro Golfer Wally Berkomo in East Detroit, Michigan. Wally offered to be her coach agent and pay all her expenses until she became a Pro, but she turned it down to play softball.
She played Semi-Pro Softball, traveled in the Michigan-Ohio Women’s Fast Pitch League. Her lifetime batting average was 371. She played and coached fast pitch softball teams in Wyandotte, Detroit & Garden City, Michigan and Tampa, Florida also Slow-Pitch in Ford Motor Company League in Dearborn, Michigan and Recreation League in Boca Raton, Florida.
She was an American Junior Bowling Congress, Certified Coach/Instructor and gave weekly bowling lessons to the Cub Scout Den in Michigan, of which she was a Co-Den Mother. She helped teach bowling to disabled children in Florida until she was sideswiped by a stroke. She was a member of the Michigan Women’s Professional Bowling Association in Detroit and the National WIBC. She bowled and was League Secretary at Conner Lanes in Detroit, Michigan for ten years and Westland Lanes in Westland, Michigan for 18 years and Don Carter Lanes in Florida for another 20years. Her lifetime average was 178. Was a staunch Marlins fan and attended the 1997 World Series.
She worked at Hudson Motor in Detroit as an IBM Machine Operator. After Hudson Motor closed she went to Ford Motor Company as a Key Punch Operator and then promoted to a Computer Control Clerk. She retired from Ford Motor Company in 1971. She attended Wayne State University, Henry Ford Community College and University of Michigan, Dearborn Ext. She owned a party store and bar/restaurant in Garden City, Michigan. She sold both in 1978 and moved to Florida. She spent the next 26 years delivering newspapers for the SunSentinel, Miami-Herald, NY Times, USA Today and Palm Beach Post. She finally quit in 2004 and retired to her home in Boca Raton.
June is survived by her loving companion of 40+ years Trish Castro. Adopted son Stephen Castro. Sister Pat Turner, Nieces Cherie & Pat Turner, Nephews John Jr. & Chris Turner. Grand Nephews John Turner III, Paul Herndon & Colton Turner. Grand Nieces Katelyn, Brittney & Brooke Turner. Great-Grand Nephew Coby Turner Scallan.
Also her life-long friends Mona O’Connor, Marion Winter & Barbie Kemeny.
