Larry was born in Newport News, Virginia, and spent his childhood in Inverness, Maryland. He is an alumnus of Dundalk High School and holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business from the University of Maryland. During his studies, he played Lacrosse for the University of Maryland and served part-time in the Air National Guard Reserves. Later, in 1959, Larry married Joanne Alfieri of Baltimore, Maryland, and together they raised three children, creating a loving and supportive home.
Following his college graduation, Larry embarked on a distinguished 25-year career in Finance at The Central Intelligence Agency, where he served for 25 years before retiring. His work provided him and his family with the opportunity to experience life and travel extensively throughout Central America, Europe, and the Orient.
Larry truly knew how to enjoy life. He loved playing golf and lacrosse, as well as playing bridge with his overseas friends, dancing with his beloved wife, and traveling abroad and to his retirement home in Boynton Beach, Florida. He was known for his incredible sense of humor, storytelling, teaching Mandarin and Japanese and how to use “chopsticks” to his grandchildren and other young relatives, as well as his famous “fried shrimp and Maryland crab cakes,” which made family dinners unforgettable.
He was deeply committed to his children, always making time to help with sports, homework, and offering guidance on our careers. Beyond his family, he was actively involved in his community. He volunteered as a Palm Beach Community Police Reserve Officer, demonstrating his commitment to service and safety. For over 12 years, he worked as a Golf Ranger and GPS Operator for The Boca Raton Polo Club. He also served as a Catholic CCD teacher at Ft. Clayton, Panama, further highlighting his commitment to helping others.
Larry was a devoted man, and his impact on those around him was significant. His unwavering faith, dedication to family, nurturing friendships, and love for his country were evident in all he did. He had a special fondness for helping others, and he deeply valued the friendships he made with his "overseas" friends.
Larry is survived by his children – Kimberly McLean-Hunt, Penny McLean, and Lawrence McLean,Jr. – as well as his cherished grandchildren, Derek McLean and Haley McLean-Fuller, and three great-grandchildren. Lawrence was preceded in death by his parents Joseph Sr. and Alys Harton-McLean, and Brother Joseph “Joe” McLean, Jr.
A "Celebration of Life" event is being held to honor Lawrence and his wife Joanne McLean on Saturday, October 4, 2025, from 12 noon to 3 pm. The event will take place at the “Patton Hall Community Hall Club and Conference Center” on Fort Myer, a military base in Arlington, Virginia.
