Dr. Liddell "Dell" Louise Madden

The Madden family notes with sorrow the passing of our beloved Mother, Sister, Aunt and Friend Dr. Liddell L. ("Dell") Madden, BA, MSW, DSW, ACSW, of Salisbury, Maryland and Boca Raton, Florida. She passed away quietly in her sleep following complications due to stroke. She is preceded in death by father Murdaugh Stuart Madden, mother Louise Edwards Mann Kenney, brother Michael Mann Madden, cousins Nicholas Edwards and Karen Edwards Applehans. She is survived by her daughter, Dr. Matilda L. Madden, her son-in-law Sean O’Riley, her brother M. Stuart Madden, her sister-in-law Sandra Madden, her nephews Christopher W.J. Madden and Michael S. Madden, her cousins Patti Lee Mann, Wallace R. Lindsey Jr, Charles B. Lindsey, Susan L. Goldman, Carol A. Lindsey, Jean L. Chipman, Allison Applehans Lee, Betsy Applehans McLinda and Kristy McGlaughlin.

Liddell brought love and guidance to our family from the time of her childhood. She also delivered academic and teaching excellence to innumerable students and professional colleagues. Following her Mother Louise Mann Kenney into the mission of Social Work, Liddell received her Doctorate in Social Work and was a member of ACSW. Her special focus was on child welfare, those with PTSD, and the lives and conditions of migrant and seasonal farm workers. She blended the rigor of her academic accomplishments with the love of the classroom, teaching innumerable appreciative students at Ferrum College, Trevecca Nazarene University, Florida Atlantic University, The Catholic University of America, Salisbury University (Tenured) and University of Maryland Eastern Shore, inspiring many of them to follow her footsteps into both applied Social Work and to teach at all levels of the academy.

Liddell was an avid reader, gardener and animal lover who welcomed many stray animals into her home with love and care. She was active in the St. Peters Church Alter Guild, and volunteered and traveled for Red Cross disaster relief. She truly had compassion for others and gave back to the world.

Liddell had a life-long love of the ocean and of Florida, beginning with her family visits to Ft. Lauderdale to her later residences in Deerfield Beach and in Boca Raton. She made and nurtured life-long friendships with numerous residents of her Boca Raton condominium community.

Liddell L. Madden was a blessing to her family, a gift to her profession and students, a joy to her friends, and an example of a life lived to its fullest. We celebrate her life as we mourn her passing. Visitation to be held at Babione-Kraeer Funeral Home at 1100 North Federal Highway, Boca Raton, FL 33432 on Sunday April 16, 2023 from 4 to 6 pm. Funeral to be held at St. Gregory’s Episcopal Church at 100 NE Mizner Blvd, Boca Raton, FL 33432 on Monday April 17th at 10:30 am. Interment to follow at Boca Raton Mausoleum, Boca Raton, FL.
