Respectfully, I'd much rather be reading about what Mr. Pompura is happily doing now, than writing a condolence about his passing, 10 years ago. 
 But, we don't get to choose. So, in reading the news, I'll send my well wishes skyward, hoping they land on someone whose heart is comforted by them.
 I think it would have been around 1971 that Mr. Pompura was my high school chemistry teacher, in Niles, Ohio.  
 While many teachers and/or classes may leave differing opinions in their wake, either pro or con, I doubt that's the case, here.
 If any of my classmates ever dissented, it must have been on the day of a test.  We can't hold that against a teacher.
 Our teacher took his job seriously--yes. But, he did his best to instill it with fun along the way, as often as possible. We benefitted from it.
 More than anything, what I remember most, was his typically-positive outlook, and his pervasive sense of humor. 
 For the last 50 years, I still remember a humorous line he once told us right before class began:
 "Many men smoke, but Fu Manchu".
 I remember who said it. And, his impish smile. We all laughed with him.
 I remember another occasion, slightly different. 
 He knew I played guitar. He said he needed a new tuning peg or two for his bass guitar, and, wondered if I  knew a good place to buy one at a good price.
 I told him I had a used Mayfair bass guitar, and he could buy the whole thing for $25, to use for parts as he pleased. 
 That afternoon, he came to our apartment after school, to take a look. After saying a polite, 'Hello', to my mother, he came to my room, to have a look.
 He eyed it over, with a look on his face I didn't understand, until he explained:
 He said the parts would work. And, the price was more than fair. 
 But, he just didn't think it was right to tear apart a functional guitar, when all he needed was a part or two.
 With that, I learned a lesson about ethics and morals, words alone never could have.
 That's the Mr. Pompura I remember. Thanks!

It's unbelievable to me that you have been gone for a year!  I feel like it was just yesterday when I was sitting  by your side holding your strong but fragile hand.  Dad ... I loved you Mr. Pompura. I can't believe you're gone...I wish I didn't know, in my mind you are forever. I'm sorry I was always falling asleep in class, I was growing and I just couldn't help it! The world is way less cool without you Mr. P. I just can't bare to think how deeply your sweet, fine family must miss your preciousness.

Pete was probably one of the kindest people in my childhood memories of Youngstown---good family and neighborhood times of so long ago.  I'm so sorry for your loss--he loved his family, children and grandchildren so much. God Bless All of You.

Having taught for many years with your father at Coconut Creek High School, and having Tricia on the list as one of my most favorite students...I was so sad to hear of the passing of your sweet Daddy.  He was indeed special, he always brought a smile to my face.  I always felt blessed by knowing and speaking with him.  I know you will miss him and your mother.  Be encouraged.  You are loved.  Praying for you all in this time of sadness.

My man Pete.  One of my good friends way back in high school and in the Yo.  Rest easy Pete, say hi to Sherry for me, tell Snook I love her and miss her so much.  Love you Pete.

Pete was one of my favorite Homebound  teachers.  He brought a lot of fun to what could have been a difficult job.  His students and peers loved him.  He will be missed.

Well the day has come to say our final farewell and I am so sad that our family and the whole world no longer will be blessed with you around us. Although I am so sad for us I am very happy that you are reunited with my sister. (and Bruce too) Thank you so much for our lifetime of memories.

Papa Pete also made an impression on our lives at his doctor's office.  So did his beautiful Sherry.  All my good wishes and prayers are with his family.

Mr. P was a very special man who positively influenced many of our lives. My sincere condolences to your entire family.

Shelly- I am so sorry for your loss. Pete was a great friend and co-worker. We had great times at the Home Work Hotline and at the Homebound program for which he recruited me. We shared a love of science and fun in teaching. He will be greatly missed.

Sorry to see you go Pete.  I enjoyed working with you at Western.  Rest well.
