Rita M. Compton

She was surrounded by her family and quietly slipped away three days before her 92nd birthday. It was pneumonia that finally took this strong and vibrant woman.

Mrs. Compton was born in Flint, Michigan, to George E. and Cathryn Welch Hurley on January 16, 1925. She grew up and went to school in St. Michael’s Parish of that city. She met a young naval aviator, Edward Joseph (Joe) Compton in 1946 and they married on June 28, 1947. Theirs was an extraordinarily happy marriage and they were blessed with one child, Cathleen. Mrs. Compton loved her family and her home above all else and was fearless in the face of any of life’s challenges. She was a true partner in every way.

Mr. Compton worked for IBM for 30 years and as a result, the family was privileged to live in all four corners of the country and some places in between. In 1974 they moved to Boca Raton.

Mrs. Compton has resided at Brookdale (Emeritus) Deer Creek in Deerfield Beach since becoming ill in 2007. She accepted her final years with grace and humor.

She is survived by her daughter, Cathleen (Cathy) Compton Wineinger of Boca Raton and two granddaughters, Dana Wineinger Eagle and her husband, Michael, of Oviedo, Florida, and Robin Wineinger and her fiance’, Brent Gallagher, of Boca Raton. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews that she adored.

Mrs. Compton was preceded in death by her husband, E. J. (Joe) in 2001; three infants who were dearly loved; her parents, George and Cathryn; two sisters, Margaret and Mary Jane; and a brother, Jack. She is the last of her generation in her extended Hurley family.

A visitation will be held at Babione-Kraeer Funeral Home, 1100 N. Federal Hwy, Boca Raton, on Sunday, January 22nd from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church on Monday, January 23rd at 11:00 a.m. Both Mr. and Mrs. Compton’s cremated remains will be interred in the Hurley family plot in Flint, Michigan, in the summer.
