Rolf Franz

February 24, 1937October 9, 2021

The obituary was written by his wife, Godelieve

Rolf Franz, born on February 24, 1937 to Erich Franz and Hertha Feuerstake in Aschersleben, Germany passed away peacefully in Boca Raton, Florida on October 9, 2021 with his loving wife, Godelieve and his beloved dog Capone by his side.

Having studied the hotel industry in Geneva, Switzerland, Rolf eventually came to the United States via Canada to pursue new adventures and fortunes. He traveled all over the U.S.A. and eventually established a life in the Chicago area where he married and had two lovely children, Caroline and Thomas. Rolf remarried Godelieve Devloo of Roeselare, Belgium in 1993, his current wife of nearly 30 years.

Rolf was always hard working and a man of many talents. Many remember him as a passionate golf and tennis player with a hidden musical voice that would sometimes unexpectedly surprise party guests – when Rolf would belt out a favorite tune from Rudolf Schock out of the blue. He was most known to his friends and family for his boy-like charm and charisma, having the ability to make even strangers feel at ease as if he knew them for years. We will never forget his natural, hearty laugh and ability to make anyone laugh along with him at a moment’s notice. He passionately enjoyed sports, music and traveling.

Rolf courageously fought illness throughout the last years of his life. His wife was lovingly by his side through these hard times giving him equal support to match his courage. He is now in a better place looking at us from Heaven above in peace and free of pain. His presence in our lives made us better and he will be forever missed.

Rolf is survived by his loving and dedicated wife, Godelieve Devloo-Franz; his son and wife, Thomas & Jennifer Franz; his daughter and husband, Caroline Franz & Benito Mendez; his step-son and wife, Steven & Deanna Devloo; his sister, Jutta & Helmut Herv; his seven grandchildren, Sienna, Madeline, Owen, Olivia, Steven, Juliana, his godchild Christian and many loving nieces and nephews from the Devloo & Herz families.

Rolf will be sorely missed by his family and friends.

Although expected, the news of Rolf's passing left me heavy hearted. Even though he has been coming to our office sine 2011, I only got to really know him in 2017 when I took over his care after my associate left the practice.
He was always smiling with a positive attitude. The visits progressed from a formal doctor visit to a social and friendly meeting where we would chat about life, always in a lighthearted manner. The relationship evolved into a friendship where I would always look forward to our meetings as a break from the grounding routine and enjoy pleasant moments chatting with a friend.
Even in the most recent and challenging times his stoic but positive demeanor were noticeable, and the smile was still there.
Our relationship helped me grow professionally and reinforced the importance and power of words that are backed with feelings. This is what gets us through the most difficult times and decision making. In fact, more often than not, during the most challenging of times the heartfelt word is the most powerful medicine.
I will certainly miss him!
Wishing you all the best!

Dear Lieve,

Rick told me that Rolf passed away. I am so sorry. We have such fond memories of the both of you.

The dinners we would share and the dogs out back chasing each other. Bailey and Louka first and only Love .

Does not seem that long ago and yet it seems like a lifetime ago. I remember Rolf taking such good care of us at Le Titi de Paris for my birthday. So special!

He will hold a special place in our hearts as I know he does for you even more so. We have you in our thoughts and prayers.

Love, Barb and Rick

Beste Lieve,

We will remember Rolf as a joyful and very charming person who will always be remembered and remain in our thoughts forever. Rolf, although we didn't have the chance to meet that often, every time was a real pleasure and we are grateful for those moments.
To Lieve and the family we want to send the strength to overcome those times. You are in our thoughts.

Hi Rolftje,

I am grateful for having had the chance to know you for nearly 25 years. I will always remember you as a very positive person that would never say anything negative about anyone. Such a rare trait to have. Your jovial spirit always cracked a smile on even the crankiest of characters at a party. Your hardy laugh was always intoxicating and one couldn’t help but be pulled into the moment with you, whether you wanted it or not 🙂.

You were always a gentleman and a natural athlete. Even in your last days, the nurses were mesmerized by your muscular build given your condition. I’ll always remember the little facts you shared with me (for example: how to properly pour a wine bottle or hold a wine glass). My favorite memories though were of our back and forth playful phone conversations.

I’ll miss your “Stevetje” and how your eyes would light up on Facetime when I would talk about Juliana’s first soccer goal, or Olivia taking up the violin. I know you worked really hard and were very determined to try and come see us after all these years for Christmas. I appreciate how you really tried to make that happen but I guess God had other plans.

We all love you very much, we’re better for having known you and I am glad that I was able to be there in your darkest days when you needed me most for the fight. I hope you know how much we all loved and fought for you!

I know you’ll be watching over us from Heaven and I hope to feel your presence whenever Olivia hits a winning top spin forehand and the twins kick a goal. Capone will surely miss his favorite sleeping place but know that we will all be alright and take care of each other and you will forever be in our memories with nothing but love and positive thoughts.

We love you Rolftje (opa) - may you forever rest in Peace. We’ll miss you greatly!
