Rosemary Graves Miller, 90, passed away Saturday at her home in Boca Raton, FL. Rosemary was born in Tell City, IN in 1924, the daughter of area pioneers Joseph Graves and Rosa Kreisle. After graduating from Tell City High School in 1943, Rosemary started her college studies at the Catholic women’s college St. Mary’s of the Woods in Indiana, before transferring to Kansas University, where she graduated with a degree in Finance in 1947. Her first post graduate job was in St. Louis, where she worked for the US Army in their finance area. In 1957, Rosemary married John J. Miller, also of Tell City, in the Butler University chapel in Indianapolis, John’s Alma Mater. They moved to Chicago, IL that same year to follow John’s career and then briefly relocated to Columbus, Ohio for a few years in the early 60s. The family moved to Northfield, IL in 1965, as John’s role took him to his employer’s headquarters in Glenview. After eight great years on Chicago’s North Shore, they relocated the family to Boca Raton, FL in 1973, where they both lived until their passing. Over the years, Rosemary raised her two sons, Jud and Jay, as well as three Irish Setters; worked as an occasional substitute teacher, and frequently acted as a chaperone for field trips and out of town swim meets. Not known as the strictest disciplinarian and taking a realistic view of how children evolve, she was loved not only by her family, but by many of her sons’ friends, especially those that grew up around the carport refrigerator. Once her children were safely out of college, Rosemary and John traveled frequently, especially to England, where Rosemary assisted John in his collection of first edition books written by Charles Dickens. An avid basketball fan to the end, Rosemary was often seen wearing Kansas shirts and hats during the Jayhawks’ tournament runs. Rosemary is survived by her sons, J. Jay Miller of Chicago/Miami and Dr. Judson J. Miller of Atlanta; her daughters-in-law, Lisa and Debbie and her three grandchildren; Jeremy, John Patrick and Joseph. She also enjoyed visits from her niece, Barbara Graves, of Grass Valley, CA. Donations may be directed to Magnolia Setter Rescue at www.setterrescue.org. The family will receive friends at Babione Funeral Home, 1100 North Federal Highway, Boca Raton FL on Saturday February 7, 2015 from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm, with a brief service at 6:30 pm. Friends and family are invited to come by the family home after the service.
