Vera C. Herman, age 85, of Boca Raton, Florida passed away on Thursday, October 8, 2020. Vera was born December 17, 1934 in Poughkeepsie, New York a daughter of the late John and Anna Combs. Vera grew up in Poughkeepsie with her brothers John and Jim Coombs. It is there that she met her eventual husband, William A Herman and attended college.

After getting married she was living and working for IBM in Manhattan with her husband William. She found time for some of the things she loved, painting, time at the beach in Manasquan, NJ, photography, reading, ice skating, skiing and playing tennis. Three years after the birth of her first son William, the family moved to Fair Haven, NJ in 1969. Soon after, her second son Brian was born. She focused on her new home and family for approximately the next twelve years until she went back to college at Brookdale Community College then reentered the workforce at Red Band Regional High School and eventually back into the IT field with Digital Equipment Corp and HP.

Raising the family in NJ also allowed her to enjoy two other passions of hers, gardening and a love for animals as the family dog Morgan and the three cats came into the household. Vera and her family over the years spent time on vacations at both Long Beach Island, NJ, Vermont, the Hamptons in NY and the Poconos in PA. Typically these vacations included family and close friends of the family. Once in NJ the family also regularly played golf, tennis, enjoying both a local beach and country club. She fostered a strong sense of family, a passion for outdoor activities, a love for animals and the environment. These and her love of the arts and stressing the importance of learning also made her the perfect grandmother.

In 1993 she and her husband bought a house in Boca Raton FL around the corner from her son Brian. There she resumed her career at Lynn University. After the passing of her husband she was volunteer for the Boca Raton Public Library (book shipments to her granddaughter from Vera was a regular occurrence). She finally relocated to St Andrews Estates in 2018 where she met many new friends. Surviving Vera is her 2 sons William and Brian, their wives Ruth and Renee. Also her grandchildren, Christopher Herman, William Herman IV, Marissa Herman and Emmi Herman as well as her brother Jim.

Vera was a dedicated volunteer at the Friends of the Library Bookstore. She was a hard worker and always had a smile. She could be counted on to pick up a shift when needed. A true treasure who will be sorely missed.

I met and worked with Vera at the library bookstore. I will remember her attention to detail, her patience with the public and other volunteers, and her enthusiasm and joy for the photos of backyard wildlife she shared with me. I’m grateful to have Vera my memory bank. Beautiful woman. 💫

I had the pleasure of meeting Vera, and her husband Bill over 30 years ago shortly after her son Brian moved to Florida. Brian and I lived and worked together for over 7 years. I was very blessed to know Vera and she always treated me like a family member. We shared a lot of great times together when she and Bill moved to Florida from Fair Haven. She was a wonderful Mom who raised two incredible sons.
To Brian (Beave) and Bill, on behalf of the entire Fox Family, please accept our sincerest condolences and prayers. Vera was awesome! I will always remember her with love and fondness. May God bless her with eternal peace, and may He also bless Renee, Ruth, and all of Veras grandchildren.
With Love Always,
Tom Fox

My deepest condolences go out to Vera's family.

I had the great pleasure to work with Vera at the library bookstore, and enjoyed hearing all her stories of her family and pets. She obviously was a great animal lover. Vera always worked so hard at the bookstore and really made a difference. She was obviously knowledgeable about the classics and children's books, and did wonders in transforming those sections, and offering advice to customers searching for the perfect book. I particularly enjoyed Vera's insights and her sense of humor. I shall really miss Vera.

I hope these memories of such a charming person will help Vera's family and friends during this time.

With sympathy.

Vera was such a pioneer in her career and her love for learning. I always enjoyed talking with her and how she loved her family. She would light up every time she walked into Renee and Brian’s house and u could feel her love for them.

My favorite memory was having Vera over for dinner with Renee and her aunt before the Christmas pageant. We had such a special evening together. She will be missed.

Love to Brian, Renee. And the Herman family at this difficult time
