William A. Freytag, 93, of Boca Raton, FL, passed away the night of Saturday, May 2, 2020 after a brief illness. He was born in Queens Village, NY, on June 27, 1926, the youngest of 3 children. He attended New York State Maritime Academy (NYSMA) and graduated in October 1946. He worked for a time as a Third Assistant Engineer on several oil tankers, then took a position as switchman for the New York Telephone Company in 1950. He married his wife Eleanore on Sept. 12, 1953 and had two children. During his time with NY Tel, he was promoted to Outside Plant Engineer, which involved the design of cable systems in New York City, and after that he moved to Trunk Circuit Design and Carrier Design. In 1972 he was transferred to Bell Labs in New Jersey as a Supervising Engineer helping design a computer program for record-keeping for the whole Bell System, and he and his family moved to Piscataway, NJ. During that time, he requested a transfer to Florida due to the ill health of his children. In 1977 the transfer went through, and the family moved to Pembroke Pines, FL, where William was the supervisor of a Circuit Redesign Group in Miami. He later transferred to the Ft. Lauderdale Circuit Provision Center. The last four years of his career were spent as a Staff Instructor teaching Special Service Circuit Design, and he retired on Nov. 1, 1987. His later years were spent in the service of his church, as Treasurer of the (then) Boca West Community United Methodist Church, Financial Secretary of the annual Pumpkin Patch, and in various other church activities. His hobbies and interests included sailing, boat-building (model and life-size), playing the trumpet, and his never-ending love of God and family.
