Barbara was born in Syracuse, NY on the sixteenth of December 1935, to the late James Martin and Iva Dillabough Martin. She spent most of her adult life being an excellent mother and wife of a US Marine. She spent her life caring for others and for the last fourteen years was a volunteer for both the Brunswick Community Hospital and the Novant Health Brunswick Medical Center. She was very proud of her latest award, The Lifetime Achievement Award presented to her by President Donald Trump just this year celebrating her commitment to the nation through 4,000 hours of volunteer service. Barbara was also a proud member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary and the Women of the Moose. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by a brother, Fred Martin.
Surviving are her loving husband of sixty-three years, USMC, MSGT Ret. John N. Calkins; a sister, Shirley Heffernan of Shallotte, NC; a son, Martin Calkins and wife Beverly of Marietta, GA; a daughter, Cindy Jo Peaden and husband Paul of Shallotte, NC; three grandchildren, Matthew Gural, Tyler Calkins and Ashley Peaden.
A Celebration of Life service will be conducted at eleven o’clock in the morning on Wednesday the thirty-first of October 2018 in White Funeral & Cremation Service, Bolivia/Supply Chapel.
