

He was born in New Hanover County, NC on June 6, 1961 and was the son of the late James Albert and Elizabeth Grissett Chestnut. At 19, James enlisted in the NC Army National Guard and retired after 20 years as a Major. He then entered the Federal Government as a clerk typist and retired as a Senior Contracting Officer, having worked for several departments including Navy, FEMA, FDA and DHHS. During this time, he went to school at night obtaining his masters in 2010. James was generous with his time for family and friends and volunteered for several organizations, his last being Meals-On-Wheels in Bolivia. He was a man of jokes and stories, entertaining many over the years. Most of all, he loved his kids, helping them to strive and survive over the years. As he told them, “If the world doesn’t fit, you make it fit”.
Survivors include his wife, Patricia “Patty” Chestnut, of Supply; son, Alexander “Alex” Chestnut, of Supply; daughters, Tracy Hall (husband Miles), of Leland and Tamara Chestnut of Supply; brothers, Christopher Chestnut (wife, Teresa) of Sumter, SC and Paul Chestnut (wife, Wendy) of Raeford, NC; step-brother, John Somerindyke (wife, Elizabeth) of Fayetteville, NC; step-sister, Jennifer Coleman (husband, Tony) of Columbia, SC; grandchildren, Sullivan Hall, Grant Hall, Juliet Hall and Millie Kate Hall.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at one o’clock in the afternoon on Monday, August 4, 2025 at White Funeral Service Bolivia Chapel, 603 Ocean Highway, Bolivia, NC.
The family will have a reception at their home following the service to celebrate the life of Mr. Chestnut. Their home address is 2940 Alan Trail SW, Supply, NC 28462.
