John, also known as “Skip”, “Skipper”, or “Pop Pop” to his family and friends, was born in Fairfield, CT on May 27, 1948. He was the son of the late John Anthony Broadhurst and Isobel Audrey Cavanaugh Broadhurst. John had a long successful career with the Federal Highway Administration, during which time he received many awards for his excellent service. After he retired he focused on honing his skills on the golf course. John was very active in the Carolina National Men’s Golf League and adored his time alongside his “Saturday Golf Guys” on the course. He played many courses around the world, and was very proud to have played in 48 states. He was a tireless advocate for the disabled, a supporter of the Special Olympics, and gave so much to his community. He enjoyed making and repairing golf clubs, and sports of all kinds. In his younger days, he spent much of his free time racing Formula Ford cars at Watkins Glen and Limerock Park, where some of his lifelong friendships were formed. He also loved coaching his children in soccer and basketball.

John was a devoted husband, father, and Pop Pop and loved his family dearly. He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Rita Broadhurst; three children, Leah Fullem and her husband Mike of Underhill, VT; Tim Staniels and his wife Jaime of Cape Cod, MA; and Carrie Donat and her husband Charlie of Newtown, CT. He is also survived by his brother, Tony Broadhurst, of Fairfield, CT; his sister, Betti Viani and her husband, Gene, of Brant Lake, NY, and his dear aunts Joan Cavanaugh of Fairfield, CT and Barbara Ann Cavanaugh of Westport, CT. I am so sorry for your loss , Skip was always funny and kind , I remember uncle john and aunt Isobel taking me to lime rock to watch him race, held up the lap sign , hung out in the pit with the crew all the different cars , Skip was one of a kind ! He was always kind to me and my brother . and every time I would see him he always had a new joke to tell .

John was smart and rather a serious person that always had an interesting fact to tell us. He and Terry became great golf buddies. After a golf game they re-lived each hole as Rita and I-rolled our eyes, because we couldn’t remember what we had for breakfast. He truly loved his life with Rita. And I feel so privileged and blessed that we were allowed to share it with him. I will miss our time together, Rita, John, Terry and me. I will always remember John with a smile and a warm heart. He was one of a kind.
