Katherine “Kitty” Clark Howard of Supply, North Carolina, died at home in her woods on September 27, 2019. She was 91.

Kitty was born in Patterson, Georgia in 1928 to Victor LeRoy and Florence Hill Clark. She grew up in Patterson and worked in the family store. Kitty attended Patterson High School and graduated as valedictorian in 1944. After high school, Kitty attended the Georgia State College for Women and graduated with teaching degree. Kitty began her long teaching career in Patterson.

In 1952 she married Claude C. Howard, Sr. and moved to California. Being in the Air Force, they moved several times before settling in Sanford, North Carolina where C.C. finished his teaching degree. In 1963 they moved to Claymont, Delaware where they would live until their retirement. Kitty taught at Maple Lane Elementary School in the Claymont School District (now the Brandywine School District) for more than 20 years. She taught 3rd and 4th grades, with an emphasis in science. While living in Claymont Kitty and C.C. were members of the Trinity Presbyterian Church.

After Retirement Kitty and C. C. moved to Supply North Carolina and together built their dream retirement home. Kitty and C. C.’s woods were always a favorite place to visit for grand children, family and friends. Kitty and C. C. joined the Shallotte Presbyterian Church where Kitty was a member of the Morning Circle, and ever the teacher, she volunteered with the Literacy Council. Kitty had a great love of books and nature; she loved reading, feeding the birds, traveling, Broadway plays, old movies, playing the piano, and especially being in her woods.

Kitty is survived by her Son, Claude C. Howard, Jr. and wife Josephine L. Howard of Crescent, Georgia, daughter, Kimberly H. Burgmuller and husband Gary C. Burgmuller of New Castle, Delaware, her grandchildren, Ethel Hampton, Mary Brizendine, Andrew Burgmuller, Clark Burgmuller, Charles Burgmuller, three great-grandchildren, and one Great-Grand child, her brother LeRoy David Clark and wife Bonnie Clark, sister-in-law Ruby Chandler. In addition she is survived by many special family members and friends who held a very special place in Kitty’s heart.

In addition to her parents, she is pre-deceased by her husband of 55 years, Claude C. Howard, Sr. and Agnes Dudley and Dora Sievers, two of C. C.’s sisters. She considered all her sister-in-law’s as the sister’s she never had.

A Celebration of Kitty's life will be held at the Shallotte Presbyterian Church on Sunday, October 13, 2019 at 2:00 p.m.

The family would like to thank Lower Cape Fear Hospice for their compassionate care during Kitty’s illness. As Kitty's brother I have many fond memories of her. One of my favorites is her leading a group of people to our church to pray the day WWII ended She is greatly missed by our whole family and always will be David

As one of Kitty's sister-in-laws will always remember her as a forgiving and loving person. Bonnie

My family was blessed to have been neighbors with the Howards. Such sweet childhood memories making boxes of Christmas cookies. I also remember enjoying her delicious chili and the many barbecues on their deck and swimming in the pool. She always had a smile for everyone and exuded southern charm in every way. My sincere condolences to all the family at this sad time.

We all loved Mrs.Howard. Being blessed to live next door, Mrs. Howard always had a smile for all of us. I remember fondly our families making Christmas cookies together & ending with a pizza party. Swimming in their pool, trips to Rehoboth for the day while the men fished. Later in life I came to know how much mom depended on Kity when us kids were young. She had a warm loving heart and a zest for life. Praying for peace & comfort for her family.

Having had Mrs Howard in 4th grade, she was always kind and had the best laugh. She always emphasized reading and when you saw her she wanted to discuss the latest book you were involved in.
Keeping Kim and the Howard family in my thoughts. Mrs Howard contributed so much to both the school and the community of Claymont. My sincere sympathy, Sharon

Wow memories of Claymont De and Benning Rd. The Howard family was very much apart of my childhood. Since I was a playmate of their daughter, Kim. I remember Mr. Howard making whirlpools in the pool, working on his latest building project and playing with the cat. Mrs Howard always had a smile and a kind work for everyone. She had a generous heart. As kids she would create projects and crafts for us to do or take us to movies. God does not make many people like Mrs. Howard. She will be missed and remembered by many. I taught with Kitty at Maple Lane for several years. She was the sweetest, most dedicated teacher. She was also a great mentor for new teachers like myself. I’m very sorry to hear of her passing. She touched the hearts of many.
