Born on July 10, 1938 in Lancaster, SC to George Nance and Ruth Helms Burgess, Marvin grew up surrounded by family, music, and growing things. He continued to love all three throughout his life!
He was a beloved son, brother, daddy, granddaddy, great granddaddy and uncle to his family, and a kind and loving friend to many, especially his best friend, Bob.
Marvin savored music from an early age; he delighted gospel audiences, church groups of all ages, and friends with his spirited piano playing. The beauty of plants and flowers fed his soul, and he loved puttering in his yard with almost any kind of growing thing.
Marvin leaves a legacy of love and an example of open-hearted appreciation for people. He taught all who would listen or observe to treat everyone with respect and kindness, regardless of their religion, race, or role. His spirit lives on in the lessons he taught us.
Marvin was preceded in death by his parents, George Nance Burgess and Ruth Helms Burgess; older brother, Raymon Burgess; and great-niece Elizabeth Ashley Haigler. He is survived by his daughters, Lisa Burgess Bailey (David) and Michelle Burgess Blackwell (John); granddaughters Stephanie Bailey Meter (Gabriel) and Sarah Bailey Elliott (James); great grandson Gideon Daniel Elliott; sister Donnie Burgess Haigler; nephews Scott Haigler (Jeanette) and Jeffrey Burgess; and well-loved great nephew and nieces.
A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, June 3, 2023 at eleven o'clock in the morning at Longwood Baptist Church in Ash.
