He was born in Lexington, NC on May 27, 1943 to Paul Franklin and Lillian Shoaf Lanning who are deceased. He graduated in 1961 from West Davidson High School and was a graduate of East Carolina University. He served his country in the US Marine Corps with two years of service in Viet Nam where he was awarded two purple hearts for injuries.
He was employed by Texfi Industries for 35 years. He was an avid fisherman and golfer.
Surviving are his wife of 52 years, Joyce Waitman Lanning of the home and a son, Perry Dean Lanning who also resides at Holden Beach after serving twenty years in the US Coast Guard. Also surviving are his sister, Carolyn Lanning Smith of Lexington, NC, two nieces and four nephews.
Visitation will be held at White Funeral Home in Bolivia, NC on Sunday, June 3 from 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm. Visitation will be held at Davidson Funeral Home in Lexington, NC on Tuesday, June 5 from 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm.
A military graveside service will precede burial at Mt. Carmel United Methodist Church in Lexington, NC at 1:00 pm on Wednesday, June 6.
