December 30, 1940 – June 22, 2018
Philip E. Kizer passed away due to complications of a stroke, Friday, June 22, at the Lower Cape Fear Hospice Center near his home in Carolina Shores, North Carolina. Phil was born in Grand Haven, Michigan on December 30, 1940, to Glenn and Bertylene Kizer, but he spent most of his life in Ypsilanti, Michigan. He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Shirley Cabral and Brother Gary Kizer.
Phil graduated from Ypsilanti High School in 1959. He married Lynne Meister, they set up house in the Hickory Hill neighborhood of Ypsilanti and had two children, a son and daughter. The couple parted ways in 1980.
He re-married, and is survived by, his loving devoted wife of 32 years, Patricia Cart-Kizer. He is also survived by his son, Todd (Lisa) Kizer, daughter, Robin (Ronnie) Campbell, step son Tim (Lori) Cart and step daughter Lori (Heath) Lowman. He has six grandchildren; Erin (Will) Ortiz, Zai (Gerard) Rodriguez, Chloe Kizer, Travis Teddy, Annabelle Kizer, and Lindsey Gillmore; who often referred to him as Grandpa Cookie. He has 5 great-grandchildren, Riley, Constantine, Oliver, Brynn and Karsynn.
Phil had a life-long passion for fast cars. He channeled that energy into maintenance of jets during a three-year term of service in the US Navy as a flight engineer on the aircraft carriers Independence and Kitty Hawk. After the Navy, he returned to automobiles and worked for Ford Motor company for 36 years as an electronics division quality control engineer and auditor.
Phil and Pat initially retired to Oak Island, North Carolina for the beach and golf. After some firsthand experience with hurricanes in the greater Cape Fear region, they moved inland and settled in Carolina Shores where they have lived since.
Phil is remembered fondly by his friends and family for his gregarious playful character. He loved sports, music and games. Phil was quick with a laugh and a joke. He loved the simple pleasures of good food, good conversation, and an ice-cold bourbon and coke.
The family plans a celebration of Phil’s life at a venue near Carolina Shores, date & time to be determined. The family will also hold a celebration of his life in Michigan in August. The dates and times will be published via social media. You may also contact Todd Kizer at firstname.lastname@example.org or Pat Kizer at email@example.com for more information.
