To Vera Redin,

Vera, This just arrived in my inbox. It is the third anniversary of Rolfs passing. We still miss him and you. We often talk about your visit with us in Cape Canaveral, FL a few years ago. We would like to return the favor. We'd like to revisit the days when he and I lived on Myano Ln in Stamford and we were dating our future wives.

If you get this message, please email back to me (kennhitch@gmail.com). We are hoping to visit (in September) our former neighbor who lives in Shallotte which is only 48 miles from Bolivia and we would love to see you. We have not finalized the date yet.

There is nothing Bad too say about Rolf. He was a great mixture of sweetness and male toughness. He has inspired from the beginning to be the best husband and father to follow in his footsteps. I can hope he is free roaming the heavens with his past family members that are joined together now. I will kept your memory alive with each pasting day. Until we meet again. You will now be able to protect all your children at once with your large angel wings.

We remember Rolf as the head of a close and loving family, and a wonderful grandfather to our shared grandchildren.

This is one of our favorite family pictures. This was the day that our families were forever more joined together. Upon meeting Rolf & Vera we immediately knew that this was a great family. We are devastated by this sudden and tragic loss. We mourn with you, Vera, and your beautiful daughters and the entire family. We have so many great memories, but this is where it all started for us. I am proud to have been Rolf’s friend for over 60 years.  He was a kind, gentle and thoughtful man and I will miss him. God bless you Rolf.

Rolf was a special  character,  especially having to deal with me and my unique attitudes. He was a kind and gentle man who I never heard say anything bad about anyone, in particular,  me.  He had a great laugh and smile and was a  great neighbor. Marcia and I will surely miss him. 


When I think of my Uncle Rolf, there are so many positive memories of all the happy times the family would get together. To me, he was such a unique and interesting character. There were general things that I noticed while growing up, that Uncle Rolf always had a brief, witty and hilarious comment for every conversation, with perfect timing. This, in combination with his mischievous “I know something you don’t know”  smile, indicated he could full well elaborate on his opinion of the matter, but at that moment, decided it might be best not to. Another thing I noticed was his suave demeanor and easygoing confidence, even while so much smoke was pouring out of the grill he was tending. I recall asking him how he knows when the chicken was done, and he would say, “You just have to be patient, that’s all…” 
He was such a comforting presence, and generous with his time. When my brother and I (still too young to drive) realized that Uncle Rolf had fishing poles in his garage, we decided that we should offer to go fishing with him. Then, suggest that we should sleep over at the Redin house so we could wake up before sunrise and have the whole day for Uncle Rolf to show us all his favorite fishing spots. We couldn’t believe it when he actually agreed! It was legendary stuff, and became an annual adventure for a few years.
Being a young kid and finding out that your uncle is a volunteer fireman and ambulance driver, then having him take us over to the firehouse for a tour that same day, made quite an impression on me. I was fascinated by the alerts coming from the emergency radio scanner on top of the refrigerator in the Redin’s kitchen. Uncle Rolf had a day job and a family, but also was able to make a serious commitment to serving his community. 
When I reflect on how he has quietly influenced me, I appreciate how he used his life experiences to create a foundation of love, support and compassion for those around him.  I’m forever grateful to have him be my Uncle Rolf.

We were so sorry to hear of Rolf's passing.  We know you will miss him so much, as will all who knew him.  He was such a devoted husband, father, and grandfather.  It was great to hear that the recent family gathering was so special and that the memories of it will be such a source of comfort, especially for the grandkids.  We have fond memories of visiting in NC and are glad we were finally able to make the trip after years of restrictive self-employment.

Such wonderful memories of Rolf and Vera during nursing school. Rolf was so kind with his great sense of humor. Rolf and Vera's deep love was a joy to see.

Rolf was my best friend from high school thru college; he was the best man at my wedding. We were able to reunite a few years ago when he came to visit family in Orlando; it was great to meet with him and Vera after so many years. The four of us had a great time and caught up with each other and remember some of the good times we shared.

I look back fondly on our weekend "cruising" around Stamford; Rolf, Henry, Larry and I were inseparable in those days. I remember one time we pulled into a gas station in Larry's old Merc to get some gas. Going through all our pockets, we came up with about $1.25 - which allowed us to cruise for the entire weekend!

When I was in college, Rolf would stop by about once a week and we go up to the White Castle on East Main to get a couple of burgers and a coke, then just sit, eat & talk. I really enjoyed those visits. As many have mentioned, Rolf was a quiet, compassionate and a caring guy. He was always there to help. There is no better way to be remembered.

We will miss him and our hearts go out to his great love, Vera.

I met Rolf over 50 years ago and was always impressed by his steadiness and his sense of humor.  It was obvious from the beginning that he loved Vera so much.  

We met Rolf and Vera when they moved to Bolivia.  We were "Riverwood" neighbors.  We remember lots of shared activities, in particular a trip to Lake Lure, the Christmas show in Myrtle Beach, and watching the Blue Angels perform in the skies above Wilmington, NC.  

Rolf was always kind, gentle, and fun-loving.  He had a special wisdom about him.  Above all, he valued and found purpose in his family and in his faith.  We grieve his loss and treasure his memory.  

May God console Vera and the family with the assurance of faith and with enduring love.

Rolf was a good friend and I knew he was a smart man because he had married Vera.  We've worked and played together through functions at church.  In the past year or so Rolf and I have played Words with Friends, and he always thanked me when he won.  (He won a lot!)  He complained if I won three or four in a row and asked if it was his turn yet.  Everyone will be happy to know that although he didn't finish our last game, he was in the lead! His sense of humor will be a good memory for me. Carrie and I will keep playing and remembering him.

Although I did not know Rolf very well, what I did know of him came from his lovely wife. Vera and I have worked closely together for several years as volunteers at Novant Medical Center. I now regret that I was not able to know Rolf better. He must have been one heck of a guy, and will be greatly missed by friends and family.

Rolf was a wonderful  friend and a kind, caring person.  We have been friends for over 40 years and we have so many fun memories of time spent with our gourmet group. 💜 Rest In Peace Rolf you will be missed!

When I think of Rolf, the thing that stands out most to me is the look on his face when he caught his first glimpse of Carrie’s wedding cake in the trunk of the baker’s car. The cake was Big Bird yellow, wonky shaped, and sort of smashed but not quite…and not at all like the vision Carrie had for it. Rolf’s face was this perfect mixture of disbelief, horror, and amusement. He looked at me all wide eyed and said “Carrie must NOT see this before the wedding. She must NOT. We have to hide it!” 

We did hide it, another cake was secretly procured, and the wedding was beautiful. 

While I didn’t know Rolf very well, the few opportunities I had to interact with him made it very clear how much he loved his wife and daughters and later, his grandchildren. 

I’m so sorry for your loss and know he will be missed so much. I hope memories of his love surround you and bring peace and comfort to you all.

I always enjoyed spending time with my Uncle Rolf. From the backyard BBQ’s to shooting skeet off Secor Road as a kid. He always smile and a kind word to share. He liked to kept us kids busy as there was always a volleyball net up in the yard. He was loved and will be missed. 

We have countless memories of our dear friend, Rolf; our lives were so intertwined.  We couples all met when our children were just babies and before most of them were even born.  I can still picture Rolf with his long since abandoned pipe.  Our group of couples shared "gourmet club" dinners, picnics with families, and nights boating and swimming on Candlewood Lake long ago.  We attended each others kids' weddings, regardless of how far away they were.  Later, Vera and Rolf stayed with us in Florida, and we stayed with them in Boliva after we all left Bethel.  The picture included here is one from a visit not so long ago.  We were so much more than friends.  He calm demeanor and caring ways were evident to everyone who knew him.  Rolf will always be a part of our lives and we will miss him more than words can ever say.

So many memories of a friendship of over 40 years….One in mind  I remember is of Rolf sitting at the head of the dining room table during a gourmet monthly dinner. We were all talking about beards, stashes whatever and Rolf mentioned how it felt not having a mustache anymore. Vera turned to him, shocked, and asked him “when did you get rid of it? “ Rolf chuckled and said “a few days ago” and ribbed Vera the rest of the evening..
You will be so missed Rolf….you will never be forgotten..

I have very happy memories of Rolf and Vera. We always enjoyed our gatherings and had so much fun. He will rest in my heart and I will pray that he Rests In Peace.
