

Sonia Sedonia Acheson (née Polny) passed away peacefully in her sleep on September 5, 2025 in the Cape Fear region of North Carolina. She was born on November 23, 1934 in Montreal, Quebec to Sophie (Chaban) and Basil Polny who were first generation immigrants from the Ukraine.
After graduating from high school, Sonia married young and devoted her early years to raising her children. She later returned to the workforce as an administrator with Northern Telecom's Aviation Division, where she served for many years. After marrying her second husband, Fraser Acheson, Sonia moved to San Francisco, California and continued her career as an executive administrator in Chevron Oil's Aviation Division.
Sonia and Fraser also resided in Calgary, Alberta, and Las Vegas, Nevada, where they enjoyed retirement.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Fraser Acheson of thirty-nine years. Sonia is survived by her daughters, Valerie Powroznyk and Carla Powroznyk (Martin Strunga), her grandchildren, Ryan Wood (Erin Wood) and Catherine Vassar (Ben Vassar), and her great-grandchildren, Carson, Owen, Lucas and Haisley.
She took comfort and loved the companionship of her pets, German shepherd, Lady, golden retriever, Bella, and her little cat, Milo.
A funeral mass to celebrate Sonia's life will be held on Monday, September 22, 2025 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Brendan the Navigator Catholic Church, 5101 Ocean Highway West, Shallotte, North Carolina. At sunrise the following day, her family will gather at the Atlantic Ocean to return her to nature.
Sonia's life took her to many places, but she carried her love for family with her everywhere. She was a devoted mother, nanny, and great-nanny. Though dementia took her from us years before her passing, her spirit, warmth, and love will remain forever in our hearts.
