Zodock was born in Exum, NC on June 13, 1932. His childhood in Exum instilled a lifelong passion for hard work, farming and gardening. He loved to talk about it with anyone who would listen. He never met a stranger. Zodock and his wife Bessie first met and bonded over their mutual appreciation for tending to crops, farming and working in tobacco. They shared endeavors such as displaying Christmas lights and decorations, a roadside vegetable stand, daylily farm, greenhouse, riding his tractor, farming tobacco, growing rice, raising goats, cows, and hogs throughout their long and happy marriage.
Zodock proudly served the US Army in the Fox Company 7th Infantry, 3rd Infantry Division from 1952 to 1954, earning the rank of Staff Sergeant. While in combat during the Korean War, he earned the following: Korean Service Medal with 1 Bronze Service Star; United Nations Service Medal; National Defense Service Medal; Combat Infantry Badge; Good Conduct Medal.
Zodock was the oldest charter member of VFW Post 10400 in Boiling Spring Lakes NC.
He was employed at Sunny Point Military Terminal as a Longshoreman for 35 years and was a charter member of the ILA Local Union Hall. He also worked in construction at Lincoln Construction Company of Leland as well as Boiling Spring Lakes Construction Company.
He leaves behind his daughter, Carolyn Clemmons (Larry) of Bolivia, sons, Wilbur Vereen (Jan) of Bolivia, Terry Vereen (Devota) of Caswell Beach and Robert Vereen (Marissa) of Ivanhoe, a sister, Bobbie Inman (Hubert) of Charleston SC, and a brother, Pearly Vereen of Exum. Grandchildren, Brian Clemmons (Amy), Cassandra Rochelle, Malin Vereen and Talia Simmons. Great Grandchildren, Lucas Clemmons (Kayleigh), Abby Clemmons Rene (Elison), Joseph Clemmons, Aidan Clemmons, Eli Clemmons, Aubry Ricker, Jordyn Ricker, Anna Ricker and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents Esta Lee Vereen and Fary Mildred Hickman Vereen, wife Bessie Lee of 67 years, a sister, Catherine “Kit” McKenzie and a brother James (Jim) Daniel Vereen Sr.
A visitation for Zodock will be held Wednesday, May 15, 2024 at 11:00 AM at Mill Creek Baptist Church, 1099 George II Hwy SE, Winnabow, NC 28479. A funeral service will occur Wednesday, May 15, 2024 at 12:00 PM at the same location. Burial will follow in the Willetts Cemetery.
Rev. Anthony Clemmons, Pastor Jared Galloway and Rev. Brian Clemmons will be officiating the service. All friends and family are welcome.
Pallbearers will be Lucas Clemmons, Aidan Clemmons, Alex Luke, Randy Watts, Gene Ward and Richard McKeithan.
Honorary pallbearers will be Joseph Clemmons, Craig Caster Jr, Donald Dixon Sr, Shelton FormyDuval and Charles “Super” FormyDuval.
The family asks that donations to Lower Cape Fear Life Care and Hospice be made instead of flowers or other gifts.
