Alfredo Unawa Alaman passed away peacefully on March 13, 2026, at the age of 95. He lived a long, honorable life defined by service, sacrifice, and an unwavering devotion to family.
Born on February 5, 1931, Alfredo answered the call to serve his adopted country by joining the United States Navy on March 15, 1955. Over the course of an extraordinary naval career spanning more than two decades, he rose to the rank of Mess Specialist Chief, earning the respect of those who served alongside him through his professionalism, leadership and dedication.
During his time in the Navy, Alfredo held numerous distinguished assignments. He served as Master of Arms aboard the USS Kitty Hawk (CV‑63), acted as Division Officer for the Bachelor Officers Quarters (BOQ) restaurant and bar at Naval Air Station New Orleans, and was selected to serve as Admiral’s Chef for the Commanding Officer of Naval Air Station Keflavík, Iceland. These roles reflected not only his culinary expertise, but also the trust placed in him to serve at the highest levels of his field.
Following his naval service, Alfredo continued his commitment to public service by working for the United States Postal Service, where he remained until his retirement in 1997. Beyond his professional accomplishments, Alfredo’s greatest pride and legacy was his family. He was a devoted husband to his beloved wife, Consuelo Alaman, and was consistently present and provided for his children: Henry Alaman and his wife Linda, Norman Alaman and his wife Tiane, and Ellen Garrido and her husband Joe. He was a proud and loving grandfather to Brian and Steven Alaman, Teanna and Alyssa Alaman, and Justin and Matthew Garrido, each of whom brought him immense joy and pride.
His most meaningful achievement was bringing his loved ones from the Philippines to the United States, creating opportunities for future generations. He helped reunite his mother Rosa, his brothers Alex, Ding, and Boy, and his sisters Cora and Nene, laying the foundation for a strong and flourishing family. From those roots grew a thriving family tree—children, grandchildren and beyond—each carrying forward his values of hard work, resilience and love.
In his quieter moments, Alfredo found joy in the simple pleasures of life. He enjoyed working in his yard, cooking for family, attending many gatherings of friends and loved ones, and watching the San Diego Padres. He also reveled in games of poker and mahjong with his siblings and grandchildren, often emerging as the winner to everyone’s good‑natured amusement.
Alfredo will be remembered as a devoted public servant, a quiet leader, and a man whose life was defined by duty to country and commitment to family. His legacy lives on in the generations he helped build and the lives he touched through his service. He will be deeply missed and forever honored.
