Alice Alfonso Harrell was born as Alice Yabut Alfonso to parents Isidro and Marcela Alfonso on September 4, 1945 in San Simon, Pampanga, Philippines. She was the eldest daughter and second eldest of seven siblings. Alice received her formal education from public schools and graduated from University of the East in Manila, Philippines with a Bachelors of Science in Education in 1969 and taught elementary school in Fernando, Pampanga. Some of her favorite activities then included travel excursions with the Jesters Club and serving as a frequently nominated Barrio Queen on numerous occasions for the May Barrio Beauty Pageant.
While working as a primary school teacher at San Fernando Elementary she met and fell in love with a U.S Navy sailor, Lee J. Harrell. The two united in holy matrimony on November 08, 1975. Soon after getting married, they began their family and moved to the United States where they would live the remainder of their lives together in San Diego, CA. From that union two daughters were born, Alice Lee and Mary Anne. While living in San Diego, Alice worked as an accountant, later returned to teaching as a preschool teacher, was a caregiver for the disabled elderly and spent most of her later years as a restaurant owner of Karihan in National City for nearly 15 years prior to retiring.
Alice was a lovely woman with family values whose kindness was experienced by many. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, aunt and friend. She was well known throughout the community and knew no strangers. Her favorite pastimes included traveling the world with her family and friends, cooking, playing bingo and visiting Los Angeles and North Carolina to spend time with her daughters and grandchildren.
Alice passed on from her duties here on earth on March 1, 2020 at 4:03 am at the age of 74 in Burbank, CA where she was surrounded by love from all her children, grandchildren and siblings. While her transition was always a part of God’s plan it seemed sudden and unexpected to her family and physicians. In the weeks leading to Alice’s sunset, her sister Parida never left her side to make sure Alice was never alone and was as comfortable as possible. Her daughters, Alice Lee and Mary Anne, both whom were also very involved in their mother’s care ultimately and collectively decided to comfort their mother and release her back to God. As we reflect upon the time up until her last moments we can now set our souls at rest knowing that Alice was in preparation for her journey home by doing God’s work. She has been set free and is now rejoicing in heaven as she reunites with her husband Lee, father Isidro, mother Marcela, and sibling Heidi who preceded her in passing. She leaves to mourn from her passing two daughters, Alice Lee and Mary Anne; six grandchildren, Keonte, Khalil, Kyree, Keevon, Beyshir and Sahana; and seven siblings, Wilfredo, Isidro Jr., Cicero, Parida, Yeng, Renee, Anges and a host of friends and relatives.
