Anita was born on August 12, 1917, to parents Robert and Anna Marie (Gruel) Schmid, immigrants from Germany. After growing up in the LA German community, she moved with husband, Ed Butikofer and newborn son to Chula Vista in 1943.
In the early '50s Anita began her career at Rohr Industries, and worked there until her marriage to Bill Mathews in 1966. She and Bill spent several decades traveling throughout the world, including China, Russia, Australia, Egypt, Europe and North America.
After Bill's passing, this amazingly young woman at 78 continued to enjoy family, friends and local casinos. She actually won over $750 on her 98th birthday.
Anita was predeceased by her husband Bill, and sister Asta. She is survived by children Ann Marie Orgovan, Robert Butikofer and Sandra Caddell, and is know as Nennie to 7 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson.
Anita always attributed her longevity to a nice glass of Scotch with a game of cribbage in the evening before dinner. We will surely miss her!
