I first met Tang Cion through my brother Demy, when I reported to my first duty station USS Cape Cod AD-43. He picked me up from the airport and took me home, then took me to the pier. I remember him saying "okay Sailor, there's your ship". His family welcomed me to their home and every Friday afternoon, he would come pick me up from the pier and take me back on Sunday night. I would spend the weekends with them, and sometimes with their grand kids George and Sarah. Then Ryan was born and I would watch him sometimes. I always enjoyed when all their kids and grand kids came on the weekends, they were my family. Arlene and Amy wouldn't let him watch the kids because he tends to fall asleep on his recliner. Tang Cion always asked me "what kind of Sailor are you if you don't go to the clubs on weekends and get drunk"? He called me "Sailor" and I never got to tell him I made Chief myself. It was my brother who told him and I'm sure he was proud. He helped me pick out my first car and called it "puraw" (white) because of it's color and one time him and I drove it to Bremerton and filled it with crabs and oysters our our way back. I still have the car and it will always remind me of him. Tang Cion  was a happy and jolly person and making everybody laugh by his jokes. I am so blessed for getting to know him and his wonderful family and welcoming me into their home. Thank you for everything. I SALUTE you, your Sailor will forever miss you!

Met Tang Cion after graduation from boot camp.He taught our class but retired from the Navy before we graduated.He took me home and before I knew it,I was part of the family.The whole family went to the Philippines after his retirement,came back and started working for the Post Office.Nang Tering was teaching and working on her Masters Degree while Tang Lakay was going to school using his GI Bill after work. I used to drive the children to their after school activities,CCD and Melvin's little league baseball & scouting. He used to tease me that nobody would marry me cause they see me with 4 kids thinking they were all mine. I assured him that was least of my worries. His garden made me feel homesick for it reminded me of the farm where I grew up.One time he planted squash in front of the house and Nang Baket asked him what it was. He told me not to tell for she would not know the difference. It was all good when it had flowers but he got in trouble when it bear fruits (karabasa)We used to do projects,landscape and when I'd say it didn't look right,he would say           I had it contracted, but if somebody would admire it,I'd say we did it.We helped Tang Rudy add on and remodeled Atwater house before I left for Spain for 3 years.When I came back,the family already moved to Churrituck and the children were older then. He used to drive my Mustang to work and told me he felt younger and his co-workers would ask him " Bermio what are you trying to do?" Then I got transferred to Australia where he would send me vegetable seeds to plant.I used to send dried fish for fishing was good. He was most proud when I told him I made Chief.I got transferred to Great Lakes,IL got married and came to San Diego for honeymoon.Tang Cion & family gave us a reception with relatives & friends at their house at Grove Ave then.When he found out I had orders to Bremerton,WA , he said "why would you want to go to the boondocks?" But when Edward,our youngest was christened,he came with Nang Tering & Amy and was amazed about the changes since he was on a ship in Bremerton in the 1950's.He & Amy loved the oyster beds,especially the all you can eat right there on the beach.He enjoyed clamming,crabbing and fishing while here also. Tang Cion was my mentor,my idol and if only I am half the man he was,I would be the happiest man on earth.Thank you Lord for giving us the opportunity to be with him,his children and grand kids during his final days for we were able to speak to him and see him still worried if we ate yet and letting us have a seat while he was at the hospital.Tang Lakay,thank you for everything,"FAIR WINDS AND FOLLOWING SEAS"

May the comforting Hand of the Lord give you solace and strength during this difficult time. May the wonderful memories you have somehow fill the void he left behind. May the love and support of family and friends make the loss much more bearable. God bless you! And may the soul of Tata Cion rest in peace. Amen.
