A true and dedicated friend. First met in Honolulu, Hawaii  in 1975 while her husband Alex was a naval shipmate of Dan at USS Thomas A. Edison, a ballistic missile submarine at Pearl Harbor.
Visited them at their San Diego home and  us at  our Cerritos home  ( 80s ) and Yorba Linda home ( 90s ). Lost touch then tried to locate her  when we found out Alex passed away in 2014. When I think of California, I think of Justin and you. In just the couple of times that I've gone, I'm happy that we were able to come down to San Diego and visit you, go enjoy the casino and buffet, and even sleep over and spend time at the house with Dad before taking some Calamansi back to Maryland. I'm especially glad that Dad was able to see you after so many years and I was just starting to connect with the rest of the family. 

Wish that we could've saw each other again when my girlfriend-then/wife-now Rosa and I spent a day in San Diego, but I understand that the timing wasn't there. You are a key figure to the Nalos family and I will miss you Tita. Please watch over Dad and the rest of the family, say hi to Kuya for us and watch over us as well as baby Julian II continues to grow strong and healthy.

We met each other once in person during Tony’s wedding in Hawaii. I was glad we came ,Alex started reconnecting with family.Ate Auring would call Alex and they be talking for hours . I know Alex will miss those calls , but  he will always treasure every moment of it.

Manang ko, I miss you so much already..... the hour long chat on the phone and your constant checking on how’s everyone’s whereabouts. I really didn’t see this coming as I’ve always asked you if you’re okay always. You are the best sister one could ever have. You’ve always put our family first before anything else and how can I ever thank you for your unconditional love and support for us. Manang ko, rest well and give a hug to manong Alex,Julian, mamang, papang, manang Elvie, Lito, lolo Calixto , lola Pacing and uncle Esmer for me. I will see you again in our Lord God’s time . I will always remember when my dad, brother, and I visited you when I first moved to California.  You hadn't seen my dad in about 16 years...

We all went out to eat at Liberty Public Market. (Alex had taken me there a few months earlier.) We ended up in La Jolla and spent the rest of the day at the beach just talking.  I knew you were both happy to see each other after so long.

My dad told me that when he first joined the Navy, you were able to track him down to where he was stationed (Pre-Google/Internet for anybody reading). You were the glue that kept the Nalos clan together, never missing a birthday or holiday greeting.

Manang had a wonderful sense of humor. She can be stern at times but was very kind and supportive. I feel so lucky to have shared the happiest of memories with her. I will truly miss our regular monthly conversations. She was always there for our family. She did everything that she could and more for each and everyone of us. Her love for her sons was deep and unconditional. Manang Auring was everything we had hoped and would ever want in a big sister. We love you and you will be truly missed.

You are a truest and very generous friend forever.. Remembered the year1968 when I brought my wife Nila the first time in US. We stayed with Alex and you for few days while waiting to move in the Navy Housing. Alexalex just a baby then. Fast forward 1971, returning to US after 2  years  tour of duty in Cubi Pt. Philippines with 2 little kids Reynil andRey Jr.  with us , again, you and Alex welcomed us back with open arms in your place at Voltaire, Ocean Beach. You have another son Albert. It was very unforgettable memories that stays forever in our heart. It was a never lasting friendship between our families. My wife and I picked you and Alex to be sponsored(Ninong and Ninang in  to continue and resumed Joji’s wedding). Together we partied, went places like Disneyland, socializing among our friends every chance we had.. Alex, I and friends  in submarine communities stationed in Submarine Base, Pt Lima were in a very tight friendship. Tony Arcenas, Dave Elamparo, Joe Acay, Mars Santos, Cesar Mamasig, Bob Layon, Jim Mabesa, Romy Valerio, Pete Lustria, Warnie Salcedo to mentioned a few.Already sent them a messages that you already left us. Auring, you will be greatly missed. Someday , we will see and be together again to resumedand continue our friendship


Mama, I may not have had as much time with you as others have but I will always appreciate the time we did spend together. It was great getting to visit you, going to the casinos, the exchange or just to get food. I always enjoyed our conversations too. You always made sure Keilani and I were doing well, checking up on us all the time. Always making sure we weren’t late for work and our gas tanks were full. I appreciate everything you have done for Keilani. I never got a chance to say it but thank you from the bottom of my heart for accepting me as part of your granddaughters life and as part of the family. I promise to always be there for Keilani, no need to worry about her, rest well. We will miss you always.

Mama...so many things I want to say to you. I'll start with saying I will miss you so much mama. Thank you for being there for me through out the years. A huge part of my childhood was spent with you and papa. Those were the best times. I will always remember coming to the house and waking up to eggs, rice, sausage, and spam you would cook. Whenever I slept in you would constantly wake me up with singing a song and telling me the food is getting cold because I never liked my food cold. Whenever I had leg cramps you would massage my legs and in the end tickle me till I got out of bed. Anything I ever wanted or needed in life you and papa never hesitated to get it for me. It might've seemed like I was spoiled but you and papa just wanted to give me the whole world. I will miss all the stories you would share and our talks about life. I will miss eating halo halo with you on hot sunny days, snacking on saltine crackers from your purse, watching you play and win from the slot machines, doing word search puzzles together, watching TFC, shopping at the exchange during the good deals, listening to music you and papa liked while playing I spy during all the car rides to Bakersfield and Vegas to see family, and ordering a sprite with no ice because thats just the way you like it. I'm going to miss you so much mama. Give papa a big hug for me. I love you <3  #untilwemeetagain 

Mama, I will always remember those trips to the casino, the summers I visited you and pops, and all the times you were there for me. I wish I could’ve seen you more and enjoyed more time with you. Rest well Mama, I am happy you are able to see Pops again.

Where do I even begin. Much like the memory my brother (Jan-Michael) shared, many of my fondest memories are centred around waking up to Auntie Auring’s cooking whenever we were visiting. Spam, Vienna sausages, rice: all to be sure that I “grew up tall and handsome to find a beautiful girlfriend!” Even up until our more recent visits a couple of years ago, she would always ask “So where is your girlfriend?” and I would jokingly reply “Hmm which one? Wait, what day is it so I know which one it is?” which would then be met with a flurry of Filipino phrases I dare not repeat here. 

I don’t have very many pictures of Auntie and I together (I do have a few), but Auntie always told me that she admired me for pursuing English as my major in college, so I hope the words I have written here will be furthered amplified by that sentiment, and that they will hold an even better memory and representation of the admiration and love that I have for her than any of the photos I was trying to choose from to share. 

Auntie, I’m going to miss you so very much. Sorry I don’t have a girlfriend anymore... Again. I’m going to miss visiting you and sleeping in my spot on the couch, and having my little place in your fridge for my water bottle. I’m going to miss the Spam and Vienna sausages that you always made for us, and will always be reminded of you whenever I have them. I’m going to miss going to the Navy Exchange with you, and you always asking and telling me where I should go to buy things, even though I would always say I didn’t really want anything from there. But, more importantly than the missing, is that I’ll always be reminded of you every time any of those things happen across my path. That’s the impact you have had in my life; and, for that matter, the impact that any of our loved ones have had on any of our lives. I love you, I miss you, and I remember you. Thank you for always telling me things are going to be ok. Give Uncle a big hug for us!

The best memories that I could think of with Manang Auring  is being a good cook. I have gotten a lot of recipes from her that I will treasure and remember her by. She makes  the best Filipino “ kakanin”. And most of all I will miss her great smile and her cute dimples!! Manang , Rest In Peace and I know you are with Manong Alex now! We continue to pray for you! Love you !

Auntie Auring was always so cheerful whenever we would see each other at family parties. I will miss her smile and her sense of humor.  Auntie and Uncle Alex, along with their sons Alex and Albert were very close family friends. When my mother Leonila first came to the U.S. in 1968, one of her first friends was Auntie Auring while my dad Reynaldo was Navy  friends with Uncle Alex since 1965. My parents stayed at the Penarejo's apartment in Point Loma near the NTC before they moved to the Naval housing.  All of the Navy wives would hang out together and provide support for each other while the husbands were away at sea.

The photo shows my parents, Reynaldo and Leonila with Auntie at Disneyland in December 1968. Alex Jr. was still a small baby while I was not yet born (although I was "in utero"/5 months).  I am grateful for the friendship that my parents had with the Penarejo family over the decades. They have always been there for our family and it was great growing  up with Alex and Albert especially since we didn't have other relatives in the U.S.  

I will miss Auntie very much and treasure my fond memories of her. 

Auntie Auring has a great sense of humor and is brutally honest.. like the other aunties.  When she  sees me.. it’s an evaluation of oh Gemma you look skinny or the other ha ha! Then we move on to catching up and talk about anything and everything. I remember we laughed a lot. You will be missed auntie, but I know you are happy now you are with uncle Alex in heaven. Thank you for bringing my best friend into the world. Albert is such a great cousin and best friend in the world. Alex is just as wonderful... you and uncle raised beautiful humans and that is a reflection of your greatness. May God wrap his hands around the family  and May You Rest In Peace . Mahal - Gem 

I was not fortunate enough to share a private moment with Manang Auring.  The only time I saw her was in Bakersfield for special occasions.  And whenever I did see her it was always pleasant being greeted with open arms and a welcoming smile. 
May you and Uncle Alex rest in peace with our Heavenly Father.

Antie Auring was always kind and super friendly. I will always remember going to SD as a child and going to Uncle Alex and Antie Auring’s house to visit. We would all sleep in the family room and watch movies, then wake up to her cooking spam, eggs, and rice.

Antie Auring was always up in my business growing up, lol. As all Filipina Antie’s are. “You’re so handsome, why don’t you have a GF?” Lmao. And I would always reply, “Which one do you want to meet?” And we would giggle.

It saddens me she didn’t finally get to meet my GF she always was asking about, but I know she’s up in heaven with Uncle Alex looking down at us, smiling. I love you Antie, may you Rest In Peace, and tell Uncle Alex I said hi.

Mom you are the bestest birth Mother I have ever had. I guess you are the only one too =) It is heart breaking that you are gone but I am at peace that you are now with Dad again. Thank you for everything you have done for me. I'm sorry I haven't been the best son and haven't  kept in touch as much, but know that I love and miss you. I know you will keep a watchful eye over us down here. Enjoy your eternal peaceful rest and new life up there as it is well deserved. You are truly at home now with the Lord God. Mama p was greatest grandmother that we have gotten in the world. As one out of four grandkids that appreciate mama dedication to appear at every event such as our birthdays, dance recital, and many more. We all want to thank her for being a there when we need to just to talk, ask for advice, and asking her to cook our favorite meals. Mama thank you allowing me to be your roomie for almost a year. Thank you again for the great memories throughout the years!

Manang Auring has always been the anchor in our family and a great blessing to our lives and we thank her for that! She is a great joy to be with whenever we are together and we have lots of laughter! We will miss you and Rest In Peace! We love you!
