Azucena “Zeny” Reyes Caoile, beloved wife, mother, sister, aunt, grandmother, and great-grandmother, passed away peacefully at home in San Diego, on June 21, 2026, at the age of 87 years old. She was surrounded by her loving family, whose lives she enriched with her kindness and unwavering devotion.
Born on November 7, 1938, in Imus, Cavite, Philippines, Zeny was the eldest child of five children of Eleuterio and Felicisima Del Rosario Reyes. She is survived by her siblings Elenita, Isagani (Necitas), and Violeta, and was preceded in death by her brother, Amador. Her journey from the Philippines to the United States was marked by courage, resilience, and a deep commitment to her family.
Zeny graduated from Kawit High School in Cavite and earned her nursing degree from Far Eastern University. Her career brought her to John H. Stoger, Jr. Hospital (formerly Cook County Hospital) in Chicago, Illinois. Chicago was also where she met Ernesto, her devoted husband. Together, they built a life with love and adventure, living in Chicago, Illinois; Whidbey Island, Washington; Portland, Oregon, and eventually settling in San Diego. They would have celebrated their 61st wedding anniversary on June 26, 2026.
As a proud Navy spouse, Zeny supported Ernesto’s military career while raising their children: Angeli (Jaime Jacinto), Christine, and Erwin (Christine Asiman Caoile). Her family grew to include her cherished grandchildren, Alysa (Justin Valdez), Jordan, Jaydon, and Jillian-and beloved great-grandchildren, Aiden and Vivienne.
After making San Diego their permanent home, Zeny embraced new opportunities, learned to drive at age 40 and began a career in the electronics industry. She lived a simple life, cherished her family, and enjoyed traveling for family vacations, but found her greatest joy in cooking for and spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Whether picking up her grandchildren from school, hosting sleepovers, attending family gatherings, or sharing everyday moments, she created lasting memories that will be treasured for generations.
One of the fondest memories of her children are the annual 4th of July picnics at J Street Marina and Park with family and friends. The many Thanksgiving dinners each November, that Zeny and Ernie hosted at their humble home. These reinforced the warmth being with family that Zeny learned from her parents and instilled in her children.
Zeny was a dedicated member of Iglesia Ni Cristo (Church of Christ). She served diligently as a Finance Officer for over 30 years and volunteering in countless church activities.
She exemplified selflessness, preparing and serving meals for fellow members and guests. For more than twenty years, Zeny and Ernesto were a regular fixture after worship services, sharing coffee and snacks in the church parking lot with many brethren. Her faith, dedication, and friendships within the church community were a significant and meaningful part of her life.
She was deeply proud of her children and family. Her legacy lives on through their dedication to public service and the accomplishments of her grandchildren—in academics, athletics, and service to the church. Zeny touched the lives of many through her generosity, warmth, and unwavering support.
She was deeply loved and will be profoundly missed, but her memory will forever remain in the hearts of all who knew her. Her life was a blessing, her love a gift, and her legacy will endure for generations.
