Byron James Miller, age 80, passed away peacefully on the evening of Thursday August 3, 2023. Byron recently had been diagnosed with stage IV esophageal cancer, a surprising diagnosis to his family and friends.
Byron was born in Bakersfield, CA to Carlton and Edna Barker Miller on January 13, 1943. He joined the Navy after high school, earned an associate degree at Bakersfield Junior College, and completed his bachelor’s degree at Fresno State. Byron wore many hats – a banker, a travel agent, an insurance agent - but perhaps the job he enjoyed the most was stringing rackets in his retirement at The Stringer in Fresno, CA.
Byron loved his country, traveling, planning his next trip, an Italian red wine, talking politics, golfing, dogs, tennis, and visiting the gorillas at the San Diego Zoo. Earlier this year, he celebrated his 80th birthday with his daughters, sons-in-law, and grandchildren in Coronado. He played golf with friends and celebrated the 4th of July in Spreckels Park only a few weeks before his passing.
Byron is survived by his former wife, Sayre, and their daughters, Evan (Ben) and Whitney (Nick), his grandchildren Cora, Hollis, and James, and his sweetheart Patricia Pilcher. A Celebration of Life/Memorial will be held in October in Coronado.
Byron was a loving father and partner, loyal friend, and a gentleman. He will be missed dearly.
