David Lawrence Koester II - commander of the room, ocean lover, and devoted friend to all - passed away Monday, September 6, 2021 at his home in Chula Vista, California. He was 59. David was born in Chula Vista on December 3, 1961, to David and Lori Koester. He joined older brothers, Tony and Craig, and would welcome baby sister, Krissy, a couple of years later. David was always very proud of his family’s history in Chula Vista, as his grandfather, Lorenz Koester, was the city’s former mayor. While still a young boy in Chula Vista, David began cultivating many lifelong friendships. He considered the friends in his life the family he chose and loved them as such. Even when David’s family left Chula Vista and began a series of moves around the country, his charismatic personality helped him to continue to add to his family of friends as he grew up. In 1988, David returned to San Diego to attend his brother’s wedding. While at the wedding, David was reunited with the girl who had lived down the street from him as a boy, Cathy Koch, and their love story began. In 1992, David and Cathy settled down in Las Vegas, Nevada and on July 23, 1995 they welcomed their son, Conor David, into the world. David worked in Las Vegas as a carpenter, and was quite talented in his trade. Their family lived happily in Las Vegas for several years before deciding to move back to Chula Vista in 2004. Once back, David was able to fulfill his lifelong dream of continuing his education. He completed studies in both environmental management and occupational health and safety. He also became a very active parent volunteer at Lutheran High School where his son, Conor, attended. David spent countless hours driving kids and equipment from sporting event to sporting event; and for 3 years, Coach Dave, served as an assistant coach for Knights Baseball. During the summers, he and Conor would hit the road adventuring out on father-son treks to the Grand Canyon, Field of Dreams, Mt. Rushmore, and everything in between. Sharing the love of baseball and adventure with his son, these were some of the very best years of David’s life. It should be no surprise to those who knew him that David spent the last few years taking care of loved ones. His loving spirit was a gift to all, especially to those closest to him. David is survived by his love Cathy, son Conor, brothers Tony and Craig, very special nieces and nephews, the Turner Family, and many friends who will miss his resounding voice, bright smile, story telling, and big hugs. Please join us for a celebration of life on Sunday September 26th at 1:00 on the Victory Christian Academy football field.
