Eduardo Torres Galang was born on April 23, 1949 in Manila, the capital city of the Philippines. Eduardo was the fourth child of Jaime and Elisa Galang. Eduardo grew up as part of a big, loving family, which included a total of eight children. Eduardo’s noticeable charm and handsome looks garnered him the nickname of “Pogi,” or “Pog.” When not being affectionately called Pog, Eduardo was simply known as “Eddie”.
Eddie lived a simple, yet comforting, life in the Philippines. Eddie and his older brother, Rogelio, bonded quickly and were inseparable as children. From an early age, Eddie was clearly seen as the creative and artistic child of the family. As kids, Eddie and Rogelio would find resourceful ways to work and play. To make a few pesos, Eddie and Rogelio would shine shoes, with Eddie acting as the handsome barker. Eddie and Rogelio then established the mock financial institution, “Banco Espanol,” where they would both deposit their hard earned cash. Soon enough, Eddie and Rogelio would welcome their brother, Ricardo, into their tight-knit brotherhood. Eddie’s role as older brother led him to impress his kind and supporting nature onto young Ricardo.
Eddie spent his early educational school years at The Holy Child Catholic Elementary School and Jose Abad Santos High School. Eduardo attended the University of Santo Tomas in Manila, where he earned his degree in fine arts. Eddie’s uncle Pepe observed his remarkable talent for drawing and hired Eddie as an artist at his publishing company.
Following his accomplishments in the Philippines, Eddie moved to America in May of 1978. Upon moving to the states, he proceeded to work as a maintenance technician and retired after more than 25 years of service.
Not only was Eddie talented artistically and academically; he also possessed a myriad of other amazing talents. He became a virtuoso with the organ and guitar, learning to play only by ear. Also, much to the dismay of many an opponent, Eddie was a pro at playing chess. Eddie could be easily described as an enigmatically talented individual.
Some of Eddie’s other hobbies included painting, drawing and crafting unique items. Several of Eduardo’s paintings were sold in his brother’s boutique in Old Town, San Diego. His other passion included solving various types of puzzles. From conquering a variety of jigsaw, crossword or 3D puzzles, to making quick work of Sudoku or taming the occasional Rubik’s cube, Eddie was always up for a challenge. His daily agenda included gardening, cooking, reading, and watching game shows, such as Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune.
Needless to say, Eddie was an integral part of the Galang family and his loss left all his loved ones with heavy hearts. Eddie is survived by his siblings: Norma, Juanita, Rogelio, Linda, Julie, Ricardo, and Lilian. Eddie was also an exceptional uncle and father figure to his nieces and nephews.
Eddie spent over five years mourning the loss of his parents and will now rest peacefully with them. He will be missed immensely. Eddie’s kindness and artistic soul will live on through his family and amazing artwork.
